NEWP: 1934-d Buffalo Nickel with nice strike. How's luster typically on 1934-d?

pcgs ms66 cac. It has a different cert # now and I didn't realize there was an image of it on coinfacts until now. The color is just a kind of a typical dull gray. I wouldn't really call it subdued but I wouldn't call it a blazer either. Other short set nickels I have are definitely brighter.

Is there a strike vs luster tradeoff on these, ie you get one and not the other? Does 34-d ever come as a blazer?

34-D's are never found as "blazers". I've seen a few with nice luster but most have just average luster.

As for strike, it often comes at the expense of luster when dealing with Buffalo nickels in general. Personally, I'll take strike over luster every time.

I don't collect buffalos, but that is a beautiful coin.

My preference in Buffalo nickels is strike as well... The more detail, the more I am attracted to them. Some that have been posted on the forum are incredible... Cheers, RickO

Like Shamika said, you won't find blazers with 34-D. The coin pictured is every bit a 66. 34-D reverses are usually nicely struck and detailed. It's the obverse where the real problems show.

Typical 34-D obverses come with weak knot and hair details on Iron Tail. The above coin has a bold knot, with less weakness in the hair above.

That's almost about as good as 34-D gets.

LIBERTY on this issue has a tendency to be poorly rendered, with weakness showing near the top on the rim side. On this coin, the weakness shows, but very slightly.

Top feather issues also plague 34-D. The feather is very rarely fully struck, and this issue shows it. It does not affect Black Diamond's head on this coin like so many others.

There is also a tendency for the reverse of this date and mint to come unevenly struck, with weakness either on the tail, or the head. This coin does not show that tendency.

It's a nice coin! Rather good representation for 34-D IMHOP.

Aside from field scratches at 4 and 7 in obverse fields, I love it, although maybe not at a $2.6k price tag. I would not count on getting a solid 66 for the SB price either, as that seems like an anomaly.

This is a very old pic but here is the best strike of a 34-D that I've ever seen. Note the hair detail above the braid.

strike vs. luster seems like a silly argument, isn't one the result of the other?? if a coin has a crisp strike there should be a reason why it is absent strong luster. perhaps we are talking about nice strike vs. full strike. the OP coin may be nice it looks from the images to be shy of a full strike, hence, weaker luster.

AllCoinsRule - I picked it up at auction 15 years ago. It looks amazing in hand. Not the same beautiful color as your 66 but still one of my better pieces.
