.
got a voice mail, computer generated speech, that i needed to call the irs via the number provided, so after a couple days of being swamped, i gave it a call to see what the fuss was about.
didn't seem for real, hence my immediate action.
a guy with what i presume was a hindi-influenced? accent but easier to understand than usual gave me the name bob hernandez (despite the automated message giving me a womans name, lauren matthews) ya, right, stated that i would be arrested in fact within 1.5 hours via the sheriffs office.
not wanting to be arrested for tax fraud or whatever the irs was going to arrest me for, i asked for some verification and/or information for my violations.
he would need my lawyers information. oh no. this has to be legit now, right?
if i want information, i could get it from the sheriff's arrest warrant. well, im up the creek now.
being not too happy for such insolence from a tax cheat, he got rather displeased and finally gave me a badge number and after insisting for some sort of email/mail correspondence, he hung up.
did i just offend the giant tax machine that could grind me up, eat me and not even have the courtesy of burping afterward?
go about my day and decide to see what google almighty has to say on the subject.
phew, looks like im not going to federal prison. at least not for this.

Sounded scammy so I google IRS Lawsuit call and confirmed it was on ongoing scam.
Oh, they have a newer one:
Phone Scams Continue to be a Serious Threat, Remain on IRS “Dirty Dozen” List of Tax Scams for the 2016 Filing Season

Every time the IRS wants more money from me they send a letter. Believe me, those are plenty frightening enough. Over the past 10 years I've needed to come up with extra funds to cover something my accountant screwed up on 4 out of 6 years. When I've done my own taxes (4 years) there has never been an issue. Go figure.

If I was king, I use the formidable resources of the government to fix this. If the will to do so existed, it would be child's play to locate and prosecute them.

I've had the exact opposite happen to me. The IRS has sent money back to me because of my mistakes.
Makes me wonder why I bother filing tax returns when they can calculate the proper payment for me.

Want to know the best part? The IRS is in the process of setting up robo calls to make collection attempts in the coming year. So now I soon won't be able to tell clients that the IRS won't call you requesting payment because they could be in the future. Way to make it easier or the scammers IRS.

If the calls appear legit, they are not.
One time a person called my mother indicating that they were from he IRS and indicated that the IRS was going to commence a lawsuit against her. Left many voice mail messages on her phone. I called the FBI and they traced the information and arrested the group behind it!
Yes I got that call. Mine said that the IRS was pursuing a LAWSUIT against me. Ummm, wouldn't that be an AUDIT!!!!!!

I've received the same/similar call multiple times. I went online and reported them to the IRS and FBI. Gave them scammers numbers and description of calls. Probably a total waste of my time.
It's fun to tell the scammers that I'm reporting them. They (same ones, Hindi accent) start out denying it's a scam. When I note that the Treasury OIG will b coming after them the POSs hang up. Of course, I know that the Feds who would hound any of us for their cut of a hundred dollar coin that we sell on eBay will do nothing to catch the scammers even when provided w their numbers.
What amazes me is that anyone would fall for such obvious and stupid scams.
The Sheriffs Deputy is my favorite part. I laughed and noted that I am a Sheriffs Deputy (which I am) and that I'd b happy to arrest him - which I SO would. No reply. Hung up. What vile, cowardly scum.
I'd so love for these scammers to b arrested, have all assets confiscated and for them to serve real, hard time. Will of course never happen.
I'm amazed that one of u was actually able to have action taken against the scum. I've tried to b a good citizen and have gone on line as mentioned to report these calls w the numbers and call descriptions multiple times to different agencies. Still, get the same calls weeks later from the same number. As noted by another member, if the will existed this should b easy. Treasury can figure out that someone underpaid x dollars in a return given the millions filed but can't arrest this scum when given the numbers and info about the calls. Amazing and pathetic.
if it does my answering service will pick it up and it will be deleted

I just hung up on the call since the IRS NEVER contacts people by phone. They ALWAYS use the US Mail for initial and follow up contact.
These scammers are simply looking for honest folks that are ignorant enough to believe their scams. The prerecorded robo-calls should be all the proof that's needed.

This is what I used to be able to tell my clients, but may soon change.
IRS could soon start to use robo calls for debt collection

the person (no name) at my phone number owed taxes, and to call an Area Code 212 number.
I have to call the scammer to receive my scam?
