Hi everybody.. I just picked up this 1883-CC Morgan Dollar today. I'm going to send her in to our hosts on Monday for express service. I wanted to see if I could get your opinions on what you think she will grade. I know what I'm thinking. But what say you? FYI this coin had been sitting in a cardboard 2x2 marked MS65 with a price of $175.00 written in pencil. It had been sitting in a safe deposit box since about 1995.

Those lines around the eagle are die polish marks.

Hope it's a 68 and I eat crow (not the first time either!!)
PS: crow is a delicious white meat and tastes like chicken.

Well, just Love coins, period.
The cheek appears to be unusually clean for an Unc. CC Morgan.
Collecting coins as long as I have, the cynical side of me says that if you paid $!75 for the coin, there's a good reason for it. What that reason is, is not apparent to me in this image.

It looks snazzy!
I continue to preach that the best images to grade from are smart-phone images with the coin angled between 30-60ish degrees relative to the incident lighting.
I think it is cleaned. If it is not, 66.
And that hairlined, dipped out Barber is not. Is this a joke?
Beautiful coin!

Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Some people are so frustrated with being wrong, they have to hijack another thread to cry some more. That would be the joke.
Just to clear a few things up. I didn't pay $175.00 for this coin. I paid $500.00 on it, strong 65 money. I examined the coin before purchasing and there was nothing that looked off to me on the coin in hand. The $175.00 is what was written on the 2x2 flip from back in the '90's.. I just thought it was neat to see a price tag like that from back then.
Does the dealer have other graded coins? The easiest way for me to spot problem coins is when a seller has a bunch of graded coins and a really nice looking valuable coin is not graded. Not saying that is the case here but a good lesson when buying on eBay for instance.

Also, is anyone concerned about the rim ding/pit at 9 Oclock on the reverse?

Some people just like to be trolls. Carry on.

The dealer I bought it from does not specialize in coins. He mostly sells bullion. Around 95% or higher of his stock is raw coins that customers bring in. The only graded coins he carries are if they are already slabbed.

That is not a rim ding/pit. That is a toning spot.
Send it in and let us know. The fact that Connecticoin thinks it is MS68, or an $80000 coin, should concern you some. He also thinks XF45 coins are not supposed to have any marks or hairlines.

The submission form is all filled out and it's ready to go. I couldn't see it coming back as a 68 but a 67 or 67+ is a strong possibility. A 68 would be a gift from the coin gods...

The Morgan may or may not grade. Too hard to tell from the images. One thing for sure, that circ'd and scrubby Barber Half is a "market acceptable" disaster. One can either see that, or not. Also, ownership doesn't just add a point, it provides rose-colored blinders.

I'll pray for you!
a nice cc and it may grade, perhaps even a lofty grade but the coin has been tampered with.
perhaps just improper and/or vigorous dipping.
for those that dont know, whomever you are, over/improper-dipping can be done to give a coin an appearance of less contact by removing frost which gives stronger contrast between non-contacted fields and contact marks/scrapes.
the more lustrous, pl, dmpl, proof etc a coin is, the more contact marks show and coins with more luster usually do get loftier grades because the graders aren't dumb, albeit overworked and a bit inconsistent. never met a human that wasnt and for that matter, machine(s).
ive seen 64/65s recently, because of dipping, they looked 67/68 but were treated properly and it is good, we for sure dont want to reward coins to be stripped and to some extent doctored.
not blasting your coin and i hope it turns out well but watch out for coins with this look, especially when paying up as you will end up getting nailed.
glad you shared and nice images, obviously.

I said 67 shot 68, and did not post the latter. And I don't think you can read my mind, so you don't know what I think. Keep on trollin'.

i will keep you company in the little boat amidst rough seas as i have a couple that arrived today that will keep me on pins and needles. a 79o with some real potential.
did express so should have grades, maybe by late next week.
last one was in and out of pcgs in 2 days!

I had a handful of CC Morgans graded in 1998 and 1999, and looked at quite a few others at that point in time. Based on what I saw then, I can't see this coin getting into a 6 holder. There was a major difference between a 5 and a 6, and that was reflected in the prices they brought. Then again, I don't know how they are grading Morgans these days.
I sincerely wish you the best. Paying strong money for a raw coin is something I would never do. But that's just me.
