MS63 1857-s quarter gains 100% in 5 months on interesting upgrade

I was watching this coin when it went off about 4 weeks ago. Per photo it "appeared" very nice for a 63 grade, especially the 64ish appearing obverse where the luster seemed fresh, crusty, and unbroken. Just for giggles, I went back through the Heritage archives to see if it had any previous appearances. I was not expecting what I found.
Who says NGC coins can't upgrade to the other side? Fwiw, the photo of the MS62 makes the coin look somewhat marginal to me. The 2 photos make the coin look quite different....though the toning pattern is so distinctive that it's obvious they are the same coin. Nice 100% score for someone. And based on fairly recent auction appearances, the coin realized pretty close to what some of the MS64's have recently fetched.

Interesting that PCGS price guide has this at $7,000 in MS62 and $9,000 in MS63.

Yes, it does "look" much whiter. But on closer inspection the reverse secondary toning seems identical. I don't see any changes there. On the obverse a few scattered spots are visible on both coins. Any dipping should have removed those spots as well as other toning. The obv rim at 3:00 shows some spots of darker color on both photos. I think the current lighter looking photo of the MS63 is just in the lighting applied. It's no doubt a formerly dipped coin so it's light to begin with. My gut feel is it got cracked out and just resubmitted as is. All we can do is guess though.
Because the MS63 1857-s was part of the large Yosemite seated coin collection at GC I just figured it was fairly fresh to the market....and why I was more interested in the coin than I would have been otherwise. Now I have to wonder if they purchased it in November and upgraded it along the way.....or.....they bought it following the recent up grade. You need a scorecard to keep all this stuff straight.
CAC is tough on these better dates. No stickers on anything from 60-63. They have stickered 3 of the MS64 coins and nothing higher. Those several MS64 coins have been known to the hobby for quite some time. One of them going back to a 1970's name sale. In fact, one of my local dealers had one of them around 10 years ago and I instantly recognized it as one of the group because of some diagnostic obverse digs on Liberty's lower drapery.
MS70 does not remove all the toning and it could have been applied to the obverse via qtip. Who knows. I think the coin looks terrible myself.
