Not the SMS's...

Hi guy's, I was in a coin shop today looking at the SMS sets. Searching for the Kennedy 1966 No FG Initials, and it occurred to me. Since these coins are so hard to determine that they are the SMS coins. Can it be possible that some of these coins in the Mint plastic really turn out to NOT be the real thing? Now, I'm not accusing any dealers of this deceit but all I'm saying is I'm sure this has happened somewhere. The fact that, #1. They are difficult to detect and #2. The coins can very easily be popped out of the Mint containers. If one truly is not knowledgeable of the appearance and authenticity of the Special Mint Set Coins, you can be tricked. I was just pondering this while hunting for my SMS set. Oh, I did not find what I was looking for but I did find a "Partial Missing" FG Initials. Thanks in advance guy's.-joeyimage

I had a 1966 graded by PCGS. It came back MS67. Worth a lot of money. When I posted a picture of that coin here many said it looked like an SMS. I have no idea. I just know I made a ton of money on a $4.50 coin. They say PCGS somehow knows which coins are SMS and which are business strikes. I think they're full of it.

Way I understand the mint made them was nothing more than more pressure on the dies all are in reality are Business Strikes.

    My opinion only.

concerning the SMS sets themselves, the 1965's can't be switched out since they are in the plio-film. with the 1966-67 Sets the coins usually look more like a Proof than a circ so it should be easy enough to tell. absent that, maybe buy a Wiles book and attribute if you are unsure.

Mint sets can be switched out with the right materials, and equipment. Never assume sealed mint sets in plio-film haven't been doctored.

I remember reading many times in Alan Herbert's column in Numismatic New how this is possible (yes I have been around awhile). And for 1982 Numismatic News made mint sets as a subscription give away. If they could have these sets made the equipment and materials are out there. We know some people have gone as far as counterfeiting third party holders. You can be assured it is easier to pack something in plio-film than a third party holder.
