USPS Rate Increase Set for January 17, 2016

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,524 ✭✭✭✭✭
The USPS is set to raise rates pretty much across the board beginning next week. While past increases have been a few cents here or there (at most), the increases here are quite significant.

A few of the key takeaways from my coin-related perspective:

-First Class packages now have a common rate for up to 8oz, and First Class is available below 16oz (previously 13). After a big jump above 8oz, the per-ounce increase is just 5 cents.

-Click 'N Ship on the USPS website will now be charging the retail, not discounted commercial, rates. I'm not sure how eBay/PayPal shipping will be affected.

-Priority Mail Express flat rate boxes are gone.

-For international shippers, rates are really going up for First Class and Express, but on the First Class front, there are many fewer weight buckets, so a lot more variability will be possible within a given postage rate.

Other than the fact that rates are going up, the single rate up to 8oz will be convenient, as the vast majority of my shipments fall in that weight, and it'll be that much less time I spend weighing packages. My international buyers will not be pleased, but they've gotten hit with serious increases quite a few times recently.

For more info, here are a few links:

Those increases are ridiculous. 10-11% for Priority International, 21% for first class international, ! It is cheaper to use UPS at this point.

So now it costs $2.68 to ship a PCGS slabbed coin from eBay for a Store subscriber.

If you buy 1000 shipping labels and #000 envelopes (on eBay) the costs are:

    $2.600 - Postage

    $0.023 - Shipping label

    $0.056 - Envelope

    $2.679 - Total before fees

$0.241 - eBay Final Value Fee on postage and PayPal fee

    =====

    $2.679 - Total

Well damn. I mostly ship express, and with the price increase combined with the lack of the online discount, it looks like I'll be using fedex overnight instead. My insurance likes that better anyways, and they're more reliable than USPS.

The priority flat rates have never been cheaper for coins, even when sending dozens of coins to CAC, it was cheaper to pay by weight.

It's almost a guarantee that UPS & FEDEX will be upping their rates also.

USPS news release says "First price increase in 3 years for commercial Priority mail." No increase in rates for first class letters. While collectors will be more affected by the priority increase more than average folk, holding the line on letter rates will benefit the general public. UPS rates are also going up too

$2.679 - Total to send a slabbed coin across the country seems like an extremely good deal.

of course USPS needed to raise prices, after all the price of oil is...never mind

USPS is still a great value overall the service is very good overall.

No one wants to pay more for anything including me.

UPS and Fedex have issued increases of almost 5% to already price gouging
    retail cost and fees.

No increase on first class stamps.

Still not bad for what you get however with gas declining as much as it has its funny that they would need such a rate increase. Seems more like trying to equal out costs. My two cents

Ps yes UPS is raising rates already got the bit of news

What else is new...if you keep printing money then you logically need more of it to do the same things. Oil prices change like the tides so maybe not as relevant as funding guaranteed employee pensions. The system seems intact for now and few alternatives to a business that depends on national and international customers. I'm grateful for that.

I'd kill to be able to pay under $3 for a letter with tracking... In Canada it's $11+ CDN. Even in US dollars that's nearly 3x the cost.

UPS/FedEx rates will have to go up - because UPS and FedEx use USPS for unprofitable routes. If you want to overnight something to a farm in the middle of Nowhere, Nebraska, Fedex will pay USPS to ship it for them.

As was said earlier, no one likes to pay more but then again, can the sellers who use the USPS services claim that they don't raise prices themselves?

It's just the cost of doing business. When they start losing my packages (they have never failed me) then I'll ***** about the government. Til then it's the best deal going.

Now insurance rates through the USPS, one can do better if they search around I'm told.

I rather believe that the US Postal Service is simply trying to stay solvent.

We have, after all, been given really cheap rides over the past 15 years or so not to mention their problems in trying to compete with FedEx, UPS, and a host of other overnight services who have much higher rates.

It's tough going from a monopoly to just one of the guys!

Personally, I'd like to see them charge "standard rates" for all the bulk crap I end up throwing in the garbage since a person can only be approved for so many $40,000 lines of credit!

Incredible. The last rate increase, esp. for insurance was bad enough. This is absurd. How much can they keep raising rates and not hurt volume? This is especially absurd a there is no inflation. USPS if far more convenient for me than UPS or FedEx but the time to switch may be here. Of course, with everyone on Ebay expecting free shipping this hurts all the more. Turns out that, contrary to what Ebay seems to think, shipping is in fact not free.

Here too, of course.....Jeepers, for my little PO Box, I'm paying $156.00 per year. My lips, that's almost 50 cents a day !!
For that kind of money, I can get a safe deposit box big enough to park my car in. Needless to say, I drive an MG Midget.

In today's world, I suppose it's no surprise that rates are increasing. They used to offer up the price of oil as an excuse, "It cost's us more to fill our trucks with gas". Not at 31.00 dollars a barrel it doesn't......Well ,they don't even bother to explain anymore. I think we'll just have to expect to pay more and more for everything until we die.......

I blame Ebay, not the USPS. It appears to me that the rate has gone up because there's not the Ebay discount. Before it was $2.04 with a $0.50 Ebay discount. Now it's $2.60 with no Ebay discount. Of course Ebay gets their discount from the USPS, so it seems to me that Ebay has lost their market pull with the USPS.

If it is a true auction, it does not matter if it is free shipping or not. A buyer is going to factor in shipping costs, so the seller will get a certain amount anyways. This is why I do free shipping.

Last week I printed my postage online and it was $5.25. That's almost a 30% increase.

Because shipping costs are more, I expect more people will sell BIN rather than true auctions. With shipping costing more, there's a little more risk in covering shipping to go with a true auction. Shame.
