Somehow I missed this one:
1851 PCGS AU-55
$1645 with the juice, barely half of guide. The coin looks decent, so is this one sign of the apoc - market slowdown?

I can certainly attest to the lower than guide prices on some coins that I had listed a couple of months ago...pitiful.

However, I agree someone got a pretty good deal on a nice, tough coin. I would tend to think
this one slipped by, more so than coins like this are the latest victims of the collecting apocalypse.

This particular auction is not indicative of a weak market, it's just correcting itself in my opinion.
Think of it like how the market is going to be correcting itself on the valuations of unicorn companies very very soon.

My interpretation of the images is that it is a 160+ year old silver coin in AU that appears to be nearly untoned. That doesn't scream "choice original" to me and might, at least partially, explain the price.

I simply hate this...my work computer network won't allow HA.com anymore...I must have been spending too much time there. Earmarked for the house.

if you are dedicated to the cause, there are oodles of work-arounds for these things.
but if you arent tech-savvy, i dont recommend it, unless it is a simple url copy/paste into an online web tool imbedded in a page and maybe not even then.

Dick Osburn had assembled a small hoard of these 1851 seated halves, most in nice XF and AU, and many collectors looking for this coin recently upgraded and filled holes. This date had been on a hot streak for the past ten years or so but that correlated with the hoard being assembled. I tend to think this date will regress back down now, as this coin only a couple of years ago would have likely brought close to double what it went for now. There are a few other die marriage collections for this date that might eventually add to the number available as well.
I hate to tell you but that is a 1860 S not a 1851.

Winky - that is my signature line coin, and yes obviously not an 1851 as it has no specific connection to my comment.

Ugly coin, not original, luster not fitting for a 55. It's really not hard to believe.

Tough crowd! If all of your 160 year old AU coins have to be darkly toned to be what you think is original surfaces, you are going to reject a lot of coins. The vast majority have been lightened up one way or another. Some of them were dipped, not rinsed properly and then toned again, sometimes pretty quickly. I know; I've seen it happen.
If I saw this coin in the flesh, I might not like it, but from the photo I would not reject it out of hand.
It is tough to make decisions based on scans but I agree with TomB. But yes we are in a slump for seated half prices.
Not for the ones I want.

PCGS price guide tends to be a high retail guide....though maybe not so often for better date seated. Still, getting 65% of price guide for many US coins is quite normal (ie wholesale). The grade on the holder only gets you in the ball park. If it were my money today, I'd only want 100% originally toned and problem free seated halves in my set. So what if that takes longer to fill it? I'm sure some are thinking that way...as in a down market that's one of the ways to get a little more bang for your buck.
The OP's 1851 only has 5% luster on the obverse...20-30% on the reverse. I'd want a little more than that for my AU55 bucks. Technically I'd call it a 50+/53+. The obverse has more issues than the reverse....and the obv carries the coin...and the price.

I recently started collecting VG-to-XF seated halves. From my limited experience, it feels like a buyer's market for the budget-conscious -- especially for raw coins.
