Thanksgiving thread: post a coin you are most thankful for finding/adding to your collection this ye

Post a coin that you are most thankful for acquiring this year.

For me, it's the 1869 $10...with a little help from Brian Boosi, who alerted me to its availability, to my zeal of e-mailing the dealer with an "I'll take it," and forgetting to ask what grade, what slab, and how much image

If it wasn't for a few people here looking out for coin availability for me, Brian especially, I would likely not own this coins as it becomes available maybe a couple times per decade (given that there likely around 35-40 pieces between both grading services).

Anyhow, this has been my whale/most thankful coin acquisition of 2015.

I'm especially thankful for this one, with thanks to Brian Cushing of Dick Osburn Rare Coins! The pic is incredible in full size. (His fabulous image btw!)

Have quite a few for this year, but I think this one is my favorite, bought at a local coin show:

That is a spectacular early walker, Erik!

My most thankful coins for this year have not been imaged, an 1804 large cent from a Goldberg auction and 1793 Wreath cent, as these were milestones for my large cent collection.

I also added this long sought upgrade to my Walker set, from David Kahn:

I have a few but most are at PCGS right now and will likely be shared early next year.

The 1842 $5 in MS65 in this thread is rather magical!

    Congrats everyone.

    Actually I have three coins:

This 1875-P Mint State Twenty Cent Piece finished my set of double dimes.

    imageimage

This 1856-S finished my Type II set gold dollars.

    imageimage

And this 1839-D quarter eagle was an upgrade for a coin that I didn't like that was in my collection.

It's an 1849 Costa Rica 4 Escudos struck in silver. The gold piece is a famous rarity, but the silver trial piece is virtually unknown. In fact, 15 months ago I didn't even know this coin existed. In January, I managed to buy it and it became the highlight of my collection. I'm grateful for a hobby that can provide such thrills, and for a business that makes it all possible.

This one by far, for all that this gentle man has so selflessly given to the VAM hobby for more than half a century – including his name. He is the VA in VAM.

Looking back over what I picked up this year, I'd say I'm most thankful that I was able to add this Kentucky to my collection. In addition to being fairly spectacular for an AU-58 (in my humble opinion image ), this coin sparked an interest and opened me up to the fascinating world of Colonials.

The 1883 $2.50 is a surprisingly difficult issue to find in any grade. It was one of my few pickups this year.

I'm not sure which coin would be my favorite acquisition of the year, but this one would be high on the list. I'm thankful for my online friendship with Smeagle1795, who has a truly phenomenal collection of top-tier ancient coins. I got this from him in a swap, being rather amazed that the likes of me would actually have a coin that he was interested in. (He got a nicely toned proof silver 3-cent piece from me; I got this Hadrian plus a little money. I'll settle for his "lesser castoffs" any day!)

Naturally, I am also grateful for all of my other online friends here, too. image

Ancient Roman Empire: orichalcum sestertius of Hadrian, struck ca. 134-138 AD

Obverse: HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, laureate bust of Hadrian right, slight drapery on far shoulder.

Reverse: AE-QVI[TAS] A[V]G, S C across field, Aequitas standing facing, head left, holding scales and scepter.

Struck at Rome ca. 134-138 AD. RIC 743; BMC 1481. 31 mm approx, 23.4 g. Ex-Colosseo collection, 6/6/2015. Prior provenance to Boston Museum of Fine Arts, cited in Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles Auction 81, Lot 1567, September 2014.

The Roman emperor Hadrian, who reigned from 117 to 138 AD, is mostly known in the English speaking world for the construction of Hadrian's Wall in England, but also for construction in Rome and for his love of Greek culture. His reign coincided with a "golden age" of Rome and he was named one of the "Five Good Emperors" by Machiavelli in 1502.
