What are the top 5 most popular/sought after cherry picks?

2ltdjorn2ltdjorn Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭✭
I believe that most look for...

1942/1
1942/1-D
1952 super bird
1995 DDO
?

Do you have 3-5 that you always scan for?

My favorite cherrypick was an accidental one...by my father in the 70s. Bought an 1874 20$ gold piece from his great aunt. Kept it for 6 years, got into coins and figured out that it was actually a proof!

Don't think this is the most popular, but I would say that a 20$ gold piece Proof cherry pick is among the most sought after. image

I was looking through the slabbed coins of a major dealer about 10 yrs ago and an NGC MS63 1850 half caught my eye because it's a nice date in decent unc. You see a lot
of early seated coins looking somewhat PL under heavy toning (ie little luster). This coin was no exception. It was a decent coin but the price was strong enough to eliminate
further consideration. Next time I saw the coin it was in a Proof 63 holder. It never crossed my mind that the coin could be a proof.

Although not among the most sought after, I check the legions of 1861 quarter eagles offered on ebay for these.

1916 DDO Buffalo nickel. This is one you can identify without the date being visible if you know what you're looking for.

Also, 1918/7 Buffalo nickel. It's not obvious to the untrained eye, but it's worth a fortune.

The 1892-O micro O half is a good one. Three legged buffalos can still be found, too. Various overdates, double dies, etc.

IMO the best cherrypicks for the morgan series
    1900 o/cc
and any 1880 over 79 overdates (single or both digits) from all mints

1901 DDR Morgan. Easy to see with the naked eye, scarce enough to be worth your while, mainstream enough to be included in most price lists (i.e. Redbook, Coin Values, etc.). I've picked two off of Ebay in the past two years...

I also regularly scan for the 1890 CC "Tailbar" Morgan, of which I've found many and the 1916 DDO Buffalo, of which I've found zilch...

Did either grade? I remember the AU details one you found was quite a coin save for a few hairlines.

I like the 1961 DDR proof Franklin, the 1956 type 1 proof Franklin, the 1964 AH proof Kennedy, 1951 DDR proof Franklin, the 1952 proof superbird quarter and the 1951 cameo proof Tumor variety quarter.

The 2009p Lincoln cent wddr-006 (skeleton finger) with the late stage large die crack obverse and reverse. It's a modern rarity!

Although I doubt that many (if any) are left in the wild I suspect that every 1955 cent is at least checked.

Yeah, the AU details one could have been REALLY nice without those obverse hairlines. It is in a PCGS Genuine AU details slab. The other one I found a couple months ago and should grade VF30 or 35. It will go in as soon as I have 8 raw coins to fill out my coupon submission...

I see the 1946DDR WLH as good cherry pick- top five? Not likely

1888-o hotlips Morgan followed by the 1901DDR shifted eagle

    1937-d 3 Legged Buff

I would list the 1955 DDO Lincoln and the 1972- but those just do not seem to be cherry picked

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • There's been a good amount of attention paid here to the 1888/7 S-1 Indian Cent, after I picked a G06 off eBay last year and Rick Snow picked a choice VF off eBay a couple months ago.

I'm partial to the 61 DDR Proof Franklin, the superbird proof quarter, and the 34d DDO Peace dollar. The second two are still readily available in the wild.

Those are some nice interesting picks. No,you have a good idea! We should categorize the best/famous cherry pick. Meaning,5 top picks for cents 5 top picks for nickles 5 top picks for dimes... you get the idea. Cool thread! We'll let the OP make the first list ,if he wishes?

In everyday pocket change, the only things I look for on a regular basis are the 1998-2000 cents with the close AM, the 1983 DDR cent, 1984 DDO cent, and the 1995 DDO cent. If I'm at a show, I''ll check for anything that comes to mind.

  • Universal Cherry Pciks:
    The DD cents - 1955, 1972, 1995
    Buff 1937 3 leg, 1918/7, 1916/16
    Dime 1941/2, both branchs

Others depend on specialty - say seated Deims:
1841-O closed bud, large and small O
    1872 flipped DDR
    1873 arr DDO

My dad set me on a quest as a kid. It's almost obsessive believing I will find a 1943 Copper Cent.
1916 takes second place with 3 coins: Standing Liberty quarter, Mercury dime from Denver and the DDO Nickel.
For the fifth spot, I will plead the fifth.

I feel the 72 DDR is over rated and not all that scarce.

The 73 Double die obverse is is very tough and the best I have found to date is an au.

The closed bud 1841 o dime is still considered to be the holy grail of seated dimes aside from the 1839 pie obverse for which there is 5-6 known in all grades.

Another neat pairs is the 1843 large O quarter and 1844 reverse of 43 o metal turn large o quarter.

Last lets not for get the 1875 s half dollar micro s.

All these coins were covered in the 2011 PowerPoint presentation at the winter Fun show. Some new and rare cherry picks will be presented at this years meeting including a few R8 coins, one known to date.
