I'm not sure how long it's gonna last, but I'll take it even if it's just for a day. LOL

I'm a Phillies fan who's amazed at them so far. Not sure they'll stay up there - the NL East is a puzzle this year, due to the bad start of the Nats, the pitching issues for the Mets and the high-slugging Braves.

Those Mets just pulled a boner.....batting out of order! LOL.

    I agree with ya!

The Nats won the division by 20 games last season, and the Phillies finished last by around 30 games out. It is certainly quite difficult for a bottom team to dramatically turn around a situation such as that in the following season to win the division.

So while I am quite enjoying this for now, I have no illusions and realize that it could end at any time.

    But then again...... :)

Wouldn't it be funny if the Mets miss making the playoffs this season by one game because of that?

I'd be laughing about that for years, maybe decades. :D

Well, that didn't last long, did it? Kinda reminds me of that old joke about the Cleveland Indians back when they were a bad team: "Pennant fever in Cleveland is just a 24-hour virus".

Well this 2018 team isn't likely going to make anyone forget the 2008 or 1980 team. However they are the youngest team in baseball with a rookie manager. So in my view if they can develop good habits and work hard to stay competitive, which it appears that Kapler has them doing, perhaps we don't get it done this season, but the future would look bright.

If the pitching can stay solid or improve a bit, and the hitters can improve more than a bit, I think we do have a decent chance of making the playoffs this season. If we could do that, even if we get beat in the playoffs, i would still consider it to be a good season.

Oh brother...we don't seem to be going in the right direction at this point.

Well, it was a longshot for this season anyway, but now the inevitable unfortunately appears to be happening. :/

The Phillies continue to hang in there.

Still going to be tough, but if the Nats continue to flounder, i think the Phils at this point have a half-decent chance of making the playoffs.

We shall see. It's been an enjoyable season thus far.

I'm still stunned that they are 10 games above .500 at this point. The June schedule was pretty rough yet they managed to acquit themselves pretty well, 'cept for the Yankees series.

It is stunning, considering that Arrieta's record is only 5-6, and the hitters for the season aren't exactly ripping the cover off the ball.

Thankfully Nola is pitching great, Eflin is emerging nicely, and the hits seem to be coming on a timely basis.

Could be a very interesting second half of the season, and for the foreseeable future as this team, barring injury, i think will only continue to improve.

At the start of the season I would have been happy if the Phillies could have put together a .500 season. That’s was what their website was hoping for. Now they are contenders for the division title. They are doing it on pitching, which sometimes the most reliable way to win.

It's still going to be tough so i'm enjoying it while I can.

I mean it's hard to believe the Nationals are playing .500 baseball. I sure hope that continues but they could still wake-up at any time, and spoil the Phillies playoff hopes. We shall see.

In any event, either way, i'm proud of this 2018 Phillies team...and the future looks good.

Especially after that amazing start by the Mets. Almost hard to believe they've played so poorly after such a phenomenal beginning.

The Phillies have better starting pitching than the Braves. That should give the Phillies the upperhand over the last 50 or so games. If the Nationals start playing to their potential they will catch both the Phillies and the Braves IMO.

    I don't disagree with ya.

I keep waiting for the Nationals to wake-up this season. They probably need their manager to go into the clubhouse and read them the riot act, break a few things, etc. But if the Nats decide to stay asleep all season, that would be fine with me.

The fact is the Phillies have an excellent home record, but a lousy road record.

They're a young team. I think they will learn how to win on the road, hopefully this season.

The Braves getting away from us a little bit in the NL East. Still though a good, decent chance for a playoff spot.

The Nats folding like a cheap suit helps enormously.

The Mets were doing that very early in the season as well.

With the Mets now 16 games out of first place, i think it's safe to say that they haven't been doing that often enough this season.

Phillies picked up a game tonight, bouncing back with a win off that dreadful game - that was good to see.

Just no quit in this 2018 Phillies team.

Mets 24- 4 over the Phillies. Gotta be a record loss for the Phillies, no?

    Eagles lose their 2nd pre-season game, 37-20...makes them 0-2. Patriots OTOH are 2-0. B)

Surely Stevek has an perfect analysis for this.

Yes, it's called "meaningless" and likely everyone on earth knows it except for you. LOL

  • MCMLVToppsMCMLVTopps Posts: 4,580 ✭✭✭✭✭

I wouldn't call your team getting cremated TWENTY FOUR to 4 as meaningless, especially since your team is in a tight Division race with the Braves. Pretty humiliating I think. Most earthlings would agree with that, AND that it was most likely a team loss - AT HOME - record. Phillies moving like a tremendous machine........ :):)

I'll bet you enjoyed last night's whipping by the Patriot's as well. Better you had your big boy pants on and simply responded to my innocuous jabbing with a "yup, they got beat badly", which is what they did.

You can have the last word...really got no dog in this, just friendly hassling you.

No problem at all - I think i've said this many times before that I enjoy smack, and smack isn't enjoyable unless it's irritating at least a little bit. ;)

There's an old saying, that if you can't stand the smack, you should stay out of sports talk. Was it Harry Truman who said that? :)

BTW: the 24-4 loss counts in the standings exactly the same as a 1-0 loss. And as far as preseason football, it's been shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that success or failure in winning preseason football games has absolutely no correlation with how a team performs during the regular season.

Not sure, either. I just know you can't lose to the Toronto Blue Jays and be considered a serious contender. They trail Atlanta for the NL East and are no longer among the top 2 wild card contenders.

  • stevekstevek Posts: 27,582 ✭✭✭✭✭

Although the Phillies didn't pickup any ground today on the Braves, it was still good seeing them get a win.

The basic problem though is that if they get into even a minor slump at this point, it becomes a situation whereby there are too many teams they would have to climb over to get into the playoffs, and not enough games left in which to do it.

Thus the Phillies at this point just have to keep winning games. They are a young team with a rookie manager, and so this is uncharted waters as to whether or not they are capable of stepping up and doing it. Especially this late in the season when everyone is a bit tired. We shall see.

In any event, if we don't make it this season, i'm still pleased with the progress and the outlook.

And why, why do the Phillies need a .199 hitter? They've already got sluggers with low batting averages.

I stand corrected. The Phils did obtain Bautista, but I was wrong when I said he was a .199 hitter. He went 0-for with the Mets and is now a .196 hitter.
