Ok that reverse is stunning but do we need the butterfly on the obverse as well?!

And yes backroadjunkie, it looks that bad.
Kind of boys town bad. Or spousal bad.
We still have the palladium eagle and American buffaloes, though.

I think it's an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly. They are a symbol for hope. Those are common in the Northeastern US and Midwest as they are an invasive species.
Would an Eagle have been a better representation for this coin, or do you think a Butterfly works better. Or should we have used a Bust coin from our past? It almost looks like they are saying the pledge of allegiance...

I think the design is really bad! However, will the pink gold be enough of a novelty to sell 3,000 UNCs and 7400 proofs? I think the flippers will like this one...which probably means it'll be a BIG flop!

Now that I’ve had time to look at it even longer, I really can’t stand that sandblast effect. It looks terrible on people‘s faces/skin.

    I fear copper pink
Why the effort on pink if they can't match the color

    The raised fist isn't creative
    The butterfly reverse is stunning

If it is a good pink, I may get them

However they did disappoint me with the two-eyed soldier.

A little modern for my tastes, but I'll give the Mint points for actually doing something with the reverse. The reverses of many modern commemoratives (especially among the $5 golds) look at best like afterthoughts. This one should look nice, even on the smaller gold piece. Not my fave of the modern commemoratives, but points for effort.

If the big bunch of losers at the Mint had used this Coin as an excuse to highlight a Georgia O’Keeffe Painting on the reverse , it might have been a winner.

I find this design disappointing at best. I have friends and family who have been through this affliction. While I do believe a commemorative coin for this worthy cause is a good idea, design by committee is always a detriment. This should have been given to a team of female artists to design (with a consult from a coining expert). I believe a more poignant message would have been created. Cheers, RickO

So, the gold content is less than on all other $5 Gold Commems??

Don't know yet. Weight was never specified in the law.

It could be there's a normal 17g half-eagle amount of gold in it, but the commem made thicker and heavier than a normal 22k commem.

    drei3reedrei3ree Posts: 3,430 ✭✭✭✭

1/2 eagle and commemoratives have 8.36g gold. I'd guess it'll be the same, so thicker.

I think if they market it well, it well sell more than the BT. There are a lot of Breast Cancer Awareness events all year long..

I think the Commems are 90%

The diameter of this is specified the same as other $5

To keep the AGW the same, it'd need to be 20% thicker

(As of today's spot gold, the Proof would be $436 ($431 introductory discount) and the Uncirculated $426 ($421))

That is one pricey clad half dollar. You would have to flip them at $70 a coin to even make it worth your trouble.

RE: “I am disappointed there are no breasts on the breastie commem.”

    Why?

Breast adenocarcinomas start in cells that make up glands such as the milk ducts or lobules (milk-producing glands). Maybe the coin should have shown a biopsy or the tricky surgery needed remove affected tissue? Would that be sufficient “breasts” on a coin? Maybe a nice view of post-surgical scar tissue would be pleasing? :(

If hospitals had "Ride Along" for ORs, or people were forced to engage with those who have to deal with this or any other cancer or debilitating disease in their daily lives. maybe some would be less flippant. Psychiatrists hear it all from patients, and it hurts the mind as much as the body.

I'm assuming the surcharges or $35 per coin for the $5 (gold) coins; $10 per coin for the $1 (silver) coins; and $5 per coin for the half-dollar (clad) coins are just that - surcharges - and added to the pricing listed above. Can someone confirm?

Specs for the gold coin was released:
Composition: 85 percent Gold; 14.8 percent Copper, Balance Zinc
    Diameter: 0.850 inches
    Weight: 7.931 grams

    A normal gold commem:
Composition: 90% gold, 6% silver, balance copper
    Diameter: 0.850 inch, 21.59 mm
    Weight: 8.359 grams

So the pink gold commem will have less gold than normal, along with a price increase of around $6 from 2017...

As the son of a breast cancer victim, I'm in for 2 gold...cost is irrelevant.

Does the HH limit of 1 gold coin apply to each strike type...as in 1 proof AND 1 Unc (or 2 gold coins total)? Or a total of 1 for either proof OR Unc?
