piece of 8, right?
i think ive seen cobs in holders, i'd bet they'd do these given their importance to early american history. i dont recall offhand seeing one slabbed by our host though. but im not into this stuff much. just dabble.
you may enjoy this 8r set if youve not seen it. never heard of calico before.

Never seen one. But not sure why anyone would spend the money even if they did grade these. I find it hard to believe that anyone would fake 2 bits. Maybe the whole coin, but who knows. Anything is possible I guess.
I have not seen them slabbed, but they certainly were part of the commerce of that period. A telephone call to customer service should get you an answer. Cheers, RickO
I would guess that they can sometimes be authenticated, although it is obviously trickier than when the entire coin is present. I would also guess that out hosts would decline to slab it, much as they won't slab a holed coin, but a phone call does seem in order.
Calico refers to the book Numismática Española 1474-..., which is essentially like a Krause or Red Book for Spanish coinage since 1474.

PCGS should avoid authenticating such items. While the coin portion can be authenticated the fact that it was cut during the period in which they circulated cannot.
Pieces of eight were rarely cut from larger reale coins to make change. They were made in smaller denominations. Some were, for local commerce. Usually by an official of some sort and they often were stamped with a tax or assayer's mark.
My guess is that PCGS would be highly skeptical about the contemporary authenticity of a perfectly pie-slice-shaped fractional reale.
