Great find! These bi-metallic So-Called Dollars (SCDs) are a treat and HK-685 is a R8 piece, if that's what it is. Per GoldenEgg, it looks like it could be a HK-685 or HK-685a.
On the forums, Jonathan and Pioneer know more about these pieces.

Santa Monica is near Los Angeles, California, and Ocean Park was an amusement pier.
L.A.R.S. CO. stands for Los Angeles Rubber Stamp Co. The number "1" afterwards typically ranges from 1 to 14 or can be omitted, the meaning of which is still a mystery.
The OP is telling half a story. This item was posted on eBay before listing here, and it has a substantial reserve so the OP must think he knows something about it already.
Yes, it's rare as a type. This particular piece is in horrible condition though. The bidding on eBay is already higher than I think it deserves so what do I know.

It's a listed so-called dollar - HK-685 or 685a, I believe. Super rare piece.
Interesting ... it appears bi-metallic...is it? Cheers, RickO

That's pretty neet, never even heard of one of those, even though the Santa Monica Pier
is only about 15 miles away
