What is this? And why did it sell for so much?

It's a national commemorative medal, produced by the United States Mint in Philadelphia.

While I don't have my reference on me (either Dean or Swoger), I believe that the mintage isn't all that small(in relation to other national commemorative medals). However, the mintage doesn't truly indicate how rare this piece is and there seems to be a hard core group out there that are now collecting these medals, and driving up their prices!

Wow... certainly seems to have an interested base at that price.... would not have expected

    that. Cheers, RickO

All it takes is two bidders with deep pockets who really want something. Considering that it's a modern medal that price does seem very high.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

Thanks for posting as this is interesting image

As prior to your post if I'd seen this in a exonumia dealers junk bin at a show for $3.00 I would not have given it a single thought.

In this case it was three bidders who ran it up past one grand.

The reason it probably took the seller 3 years to find one is because no one thought it was worth the work involved to list one.

We'll now see how many surface after this?

I've been looking for a $2-3 pictorial token issued in 1974 for over 5 years.

I may have to visit flea markets in Arizona to find one.

I don't feel bad about the money waste after seeing this. It may very well be worth the money but I would be willing to bet if you walked into 20 coin stores you would not like the offers given
