1901-O/O discussion.......

DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is the mintmark on a 1901 dime. At first I thought O/O, but the line inside is straight and not curved like an "O" would be. Then I thought O/inverted D, but this 1901.....5 years before the Denver mint started making dimes. Also, I don't see how it can be machine doubling because the shapes are different. On MD it is always just a copy slid over.

What say ye???

I agree that the shapes of the O appear different, but otherwise it sure looks like 100% machine doubling, so that's what I'm going with.

To my eye the top Mint mark looks like it was added after circulation occurred.

That's just odd. either funny business or RPM.

I kinda wonder if they used the wrong mintmark punch for a quarter or half and then re-punched the right one. Interesting coin.

The o's look different to my eye as well.

    Dimeman,

Look at mine - pretty much the reverse "Doubling" yours displays:

    But... look at the reverse:

Very neat doubling to say the least. A straight edge within the oval "0"
is unusual. Thanks for sharing. Should copy and paste this to the Mega Barber Thread.

As Fred has the most experience in these errors, I defer to his comments.
