Cool late die state on the reverse of a 1852 $20 PCGS AU-58

Yesterday a friend showed me a cool 1852 $20 in PCGS AU-58 with really cool die cracks on the reverse. Has anyone ever seen such a variety on this date before? Any info is appreciated!

Peripheral die cracks are fairly common on larger coins. As you can see from the denticles under the W, this one has started to move outwards and become a retained cud die break. Nice, but there are not many collectors for minor errors on expensive gold coins.

man. at that time if it went full cud, that would be a costly break!

LanceNewman, presumably you are saying that because you are of the thought that extra metal (gold, in this case) would fill the void but the planchet is of a predetermined weight at this point in the minting process

I've seen that reverse before - yes, it's scarce, but unless

you can find a $20 gold collector who collects by die-breaks

or die cracks, I don't believe it will bring much, if any, premium,

    due to it's host value as a high-grade Type 1 $20 Liberty.

As the Capt. says, it's approaching 'retained cud' status, but

    I don't think it's fully there yet.

ah, ic. i was doing too much and had it backwards. a cud doesn't affect the weight. doh image

the die ends up weighing less, not the coin.

it is pretty neat. these pre-retained cuds usually have shifting and you can see the dentils right near the rim breaks noticeably offset since that part of the die is breaking loose under the immense pressure.

had a 3cn show this in a strong manner.

Cool piece, I love those random things that happened in old coin manufacturing.
