Taking the cash from the sale of your entire collection and buying just one coin (without adding any funds) what would you buy?
I'd get a 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar in VF20

This could turn into a "Red Paperclip Project".

my dream coin would be a high grade $5 draped bust small eagle. right now, i am drooling over the pogue coins on stacks, for example.
Off the top of my head, I might buy a really high end proof $10 Indian. Another possibility would be
my avatar coin (if I could locate it), but I'd have a ton of cash left over in that case.
The Hunt specimen of the Eid Mar Denarius. No contest.
A distant second choice would be an 1817/4 CBH or an 1876-CC double dime.
See http://www.doubledimes.com for a free online reference for US twenty-cent pieces
Kids will be stuck with the dereck.
Waaaaaaay less risk to own numerous super eye appealing coins, plus way more liquid.

You know, I was going to say a high grade 1796 or 97 half, but Eid Mar sounds much better!

1) A 1792 half disme. Pros: rich history and absolute rarity. Cons: minuscule size.
2) $50 Uncirculated Octagonal or Round PanPac. Pros: enormous hunk of gold and beautiful design. Cons: Not really a circulating US coin.
3) A gem High-Relief Saint. Pros: the absolute pinnacle of US coin design, enough leftover cash to do something else with. Cons: not really that rare or hard to locate.

Speaking of the Hunt collection, my pick would be the Agrigentum dekadrachm. It would be unwise to actually take this trade because putting all of one's eggs in one basket is risky and I have rarer coins which would be harder to replace, whereas this dekadrachm just takes $$$ (there are a whopping 12 known: basically common!) But, I have thought about it in the past, and this is the only coin for which I would consider it.

That's my pick, too, maybe a 1796 or 1797 small eagle

edited to add: in low grade. Lol
Not buy one coin and that's it, forever.
I've done it, or come very close, on two occasions. Each time I bought a Myddelton Token. Each time was a lot of fun and very rewarding.
If I did it again, I would buy a Higley Copper.
<< <i>I have many, many years collecting, putting together a colorful set of buffalo nickel's. I can not, without question, think of one coin that could replace the passion and time I have put into my collection. My collection is part of who I am and what I like. There isn't a coin out there that can reflect the way I feel about the hobby and how I interact with it. Good question though. It made me think about it. >>
Very nicely stated, CHD.
Besides, I plan on owning 'another' dream coin one day, regardless.

That way, I might get lucky and recoup some of the losses I've suffered in numismatics during the last 60+ years. Sadly, overgrading, hype, fraud, counterfeits, doctoring, rip-off artists, etc., have pretty much ruined this wonderful hobby for me.

One of these:
The Million Dollar Coin
If I could sell my collection and get one of those without adding funds, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'd make like 1000 times my current collection value...
Wait, are you supposed to be able to afford the coin in question?
If I were consolidating my sets - the only coin on my want list:
Dale Friend's 1892-O Micro O - PCGS 68
Finest Known.

Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
New Barber Purchases
I've thought about doing it a few times.
<< <i>A collector I my area did precisely that . . . right down to the grade you specified. He figured there were about 135 of them (?) and it would be the rarest he could even have -- so he sold everything, had a local dealer help him, and off to CA he went to auction.

Three choices:
1) 1897-O Barber Half in MS66
2) High relief $20.00 Saint.
3) I would also pick the 1794 (if the right coin with the right eye appeal could be found). XF-AU.
