Buying on Ebay is NOT a Mailing List Request

Ugh! Yesterday I won an Ebay auction for a coin from a major seller with a well known national presence in the coin market. Of course when I paid for the coin with Paypal, the seller gets my email address. So this morning I get an email thanking me for registering for their website mailings and announcements. I've had this happen a couple of previous times with other Ebay purchases also.

Note to Ebay sellers... When I purchase a coin from you on Ebay, my intent is to ONLY purchase a coin from you on Ebay. I'm not asking to be registered to your business' email list. You CAN send me a single email asking if I'd like to join your email list. Please don't take it upon yourself to add me. Please respect my privacy. I don't want your SPAM!
I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.

I can certainly agree with the OP and the same has happened to me. Usually at the bottom of every email from these sellers there is an "opt-out" link, which I use.

Notice there is a email address under those eyeglasses in your post. Unless you take it out.

I've been spammed from there before so not on mine.

On the email I got this morning, the opt out link sent me to their webpage to change my communication settings and was asking me for my userid/password. What??? I sent the seller a message on Ebay to please remove me.

So spend 15 seconds and click the "Unsubscribe" link. They can't read your mind.
Some people may actually want those e-mails.

I can certainly understand not wanting a deluge of unsolicited email, I get tons myself. However, speaking from a seller point of view, I look at it a little bit different. First off, I do harvest email addresses from my eBay "Selling Manager" page. Since a buyer has bought a coin from me, I assume the buyer has some interest in coins. I send out a price list about once a month, and state near the top that you are receiving it because you have purchased coins from me in the past. I also clearly state that to be removed, just reply with "Delete" in the subject line. I average about 3% who ask to be removed.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

    1. But sometimes there aren't "unsubscribe" links like the one I got this morning.
    2. But people who want those emails should be asked, not assumed that they want to be added. It's just a way a seller can be polite.

I won't say. No need to besmirch specific sellers on here. But I've had it happen with several different very large sellers.

Unfortunately it's a fairly common thing, when buying anywhere on the Internet. Don't be too hard on dealers who fall in line.

I usually check to see if there isn't a pre-selected tickbox that needs to be unchecked. Obviously not at eBay but elsewhere.

In my business I made sure customers knew our mailing list was opt-in only. I'm sure it kept our list smaller than it would have been had we simply added everyone and then deleted those who wanted out. But I dislike being added automatically to email lists and refused to do it to customers.

    Why is it a besmirch?

It might be a spectacular business strategy to gain customers. I can only comment further if I knew who it was?

It's happened to me a couple of times. An odd one for me though, is a coin I bid on recently. I bid on the coin only, did not win, and have never done business with before. But somehow I got on their mailing list.

It's a simple opt out if done properly

How would anyone send e-mail to prospective clients if they don't use folks who actually purchased coins directly from them. It's not even a fishing game, you are talking about actual customers.

Sorry, but I'll view this differently.

not to pile-on but lets flip the script.

sellers get buyers info from a papay/ebay purchase, even non-gift gets an email.

SO. the buyer should already have the requisite info, no? sellers can also put a card, flyer etc in a purchase package, yes? i really havent minded these too much, other than them cluttering up my trash can. a packing slip is all that is needed. ive seen thousands of my own and they give out FAR more info than i would like. if it bothered me enough, i simply wouldnt include the slip though.

any unsolicited contact from there regarding purchases usually loses them my business or at least delays/minimizes it and some minor negative comments to other numismatists if the subject comes up, like now or in-person.

amazing how some capitalists justify spam. im not saying ban anyone though but justification of aggressive business practices impresses me not a bit.

i concur that a non-fancy email with no sales links asking if i would like ads would garner my interest more than some impersonal, uncreative mass dartboard methodology-type solicitation(s). although again, the packing slip is enough imo.

    what say you.

Worse than email, is when they start mailing you an actual catalogue by mail.

Nice rant, wrong crowd. Ranting here to "eBay sellers" does little to reach "eBay sellers." A rant on eBay may reach more of your target audience.

    lmao and +1

in defense of the op, many larger inventoried sellers are members of rhis forum or have employees/family/representatives here.

your point is still well-made. image

I ranted on here because I expect that most on here do business on Ebay and have similar experiences.

Whereas I dislike being added to a seller's email list without opting in, I do like it a lot when a seller includes his/her business card with the coin. 100% of the time I'll check out the seller's webpage and I have bought a coin via a seller's webpage in this manner.

Because you have a pre-existing business relationship sellers are allowed to send you email under the current regulations, but it must include a way to opt-out.

That's the Federal Government rules, but I think eBay prohibits it?

I have never heard that...it sounds like the "do not call" list (which is a joke). But I tolerate one spam message that gives me a way to kill future ones.

Seems like a lot of us tolerate this practice. I get more than 200 spam messages a day so my opinions are a little strong.

Not having an unsubscribe link is illegal. In that case, I would contact the seller with
a request to be deleted and, at the same time, I would alert them that they are in
    violation of a law.

What you are suggesting in #2 is that they contact you asking you if you wish to
be contacted. The net result is you are going to be "bothered" at least once in
    either case.
