Another Early Copper - and GTG, with a twist OBV and GRADE Posted

Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 11,632 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know, probably many won't like this, as it isn't really fair, but it's not a contest to see who's the best or anything -
in this case, I just want to know what you think based just on the reverse image provided, and maybe as a learning
opportunity as well.

This is the much tougher (IMO) Lettered Edge 1795 large cent....relatively small difference in price from the thin planchet
Plain Edge cent (like the one I posted earlier today), but I think they are a lot scarcer, and represent a major, distinct variety.

Here goes:

  • I agree that it looks like it is probably recolored and I am guessing that all the white specks I see are on the slab? And no it's not fair to have just one side to grade from but looks pretty strong so I will go with 40.

Low is 25 and high is 50 (so far), going by the reverse she looks 35ish to my eyes.
    Nice coin!

Thanks everyone for humoring me, and confirming my same thoughts.....

Now here is the obverse of the coin, and the grade - which to me looks like it was based heavily on the weakly struck obverse,
rather than the coin as a whole:

I agree with Moldnut - that's a head scratcher....I know I've seen wide variation in detail from obverse to reverse, but this
one about takes the cake. I was Ok paying slightly over Fine Bid for it, especially since the price pretty much doubles jumping
to VF - if you can find a full VF priced at Bid LOL!

  • Whole lot of netting going on there for sure color, strike and the graders bad mood
  • Wow - that is one harsh grade. I don't see anything about this coin that is not a solid VF, considering the typically blunt hair detail. That should absolutely be resubmitted. Quite a score at the price you paid - nice going!

Would you like me to send you a 2x2 envelope and a little cloth liner? ....probably the best way to get rid of that wrong grade.

Wow.... tough grade.... would have guessed better... about 40, maybe 45...Cheers, RickO
