Where have all the dirty gold gone?

Increasingly over the past few years the availability of dirty original gold has seemingly dried up from major auctions. Certain specialist dealers still find nice pieces but generally speaking original AU Dahlonega $5's are all but non existent, some nice Charlotte pieces pop up from time to time, San Francisco is hot but pieces are generally bright and processed, and even finding original slider Philly half eagles is next to impossible.
My question is, where have all the nice pieces gone? Strong hands? Processed and gone forever? Some combination of both to be sure but it's tough not to wonder how much is the later vs. the former.

idk.
but if you guys here and auction firms keep posting images, we'll have a darn good idea of what is out there!
i've snagged my fair share of images but my database won't be worthy until it hits 1 million+ images.
maybe even one day a few hoarders of images like myself will combine forces and share. a lot of information that will be!

<< <i>I don't think there ever was much of a supply of "dirty" gold. Most surviving gold came from bank hoards that were used as reserves in the post 1880 era. The gold from that period probably saw little actual circulation and couldn't get "dirty". >>
I suppose I am speaking of today relative to in previous years, not in an absolute sense. I used to be able to find one or two pieces per auction that were interesting and original. Now I go a year and see one or two pieces that I find to be worthy of pursuing.
Nice Dahlonega gold is virtually unavailable right now and is trading either via private treaty or through dealers direct to clients with very few nice pieces showing up at auction.

Blame RYK and Doug Winters for making it trendy over the past 5 or so years.
Totally agree with you crypto. I wouldn't have wanted to own a dirty gold coin if it was just 5 years ago.
Here's my latest dirty gold $5 acquisition......

I am thrilled to have played a part in inspiring some collectors to go for the (dirty) gold and even help some stock their collections.
This one now bears a green bean -

As for dirty gold PCGS to just bought back a piece that I had which had been treated with iodine. Not all "dirty gold" is good gold. Some of it stinks.
Hats off to PCGS for backing up their guarantee!:
I just picked up this coin for my set -- quick images of it. It's in an NGC AU53 CAC holder.

So are you going by Coins299, Crustygold or Coinzealot now Paul. I didn't know the mods let you back on the forum after being banned twice.

I purchased a neat dirty gold coin recently, from a friend who was around when the famous Jackson, Tennessee gold coin hoard was discovered in 1985. The coins can be traced to an 1859 robbery of the Union Bank of Tennessee, Jackson Branch. I believe it is the second largest hoard of buried gold recovered in the U. S. (after the recent "Saddle Ridge" hoard). A book was written about the bank robbery and subsequent discovery of the gold coins.
Gold is the Key
My friend purchased this gold coin, an 1849 Philly five, at the time of discovery and later sent it to PCGS for grading. It is in an AU55 OGH, has abundant luster, original surfaces, a few "excavation marks," and plenty of Jackson, Tennessee dirt in the devices. I don't have a good photo of the coin yet, but will post it when I do. I added the piece to my near complete set of No Motto Philly Fives (dated 1838-1861) that I inherited from my Dad.

I think I've seen that coin. That was a beauty! A true "DOG"
this one did not grade.......

Amazing coin! See the difference between this DOG, and this ex-dog?
This is much more of a pale, brassy, once cleaned coin IMHO. Would still fit in my collection for sure nonetheless!
Just not what I would consider a dirty old gold.

Sorry but, that dude ain't me. Looks like he has good taste though.
I hope you don't call everyone who criticizes your mediocre coins this one person.
Because Goldbully's coin here looks better IMO to the one you posted?
Is that why you're mad boos?
