Agustín de Iturbide, Emperor of Mexico (for about 10 months)

I don't see a lot of Iturbides around this forum and it's not much surprise as he didn't rule for very long (May 1822 - March 1823) - so not a lot of coinage. He came into power at a very pivotal time in Mexican history and made a few contributions during his short reign. Of interest he designed the flag that Mexico uses to this day. Also interesting is that he was exiled and upon his families return to Mexico was executed by firing squad in 1824. His place in Mexican history seems quite awkward and short lived, but one thing is for sure...he rocked the sideburns.

I love these and also the Maximilian series too. I still have the Iturbide 8R ultra scarce "Cross above the crown" variety on my wish list. I was outbid on my last opportunity to snag one.

The more I look at this, the more I think one of these needs to find its way to my collection...that bird wearing a crown is too much.

JayPem if you or anyone else ever finds a chop marked Iturbide that would be some find. Frank Rose rated a chop marked Iturbide as very rare, with in the 2-5 known range.

That bust looks a bit more flattering as well. Wonder if maybe he wasn't happy with the first design, although I believe the OP design is the more common one.

The strike on the OP 1822 looks to have a noticably high relief to it compared to the 1823 type and the other couple of Iturbide types that were also made...do you think this is the case generally with this variety ? It could be the images of course, but it's one of the things that really jump out about this coin and make it look so unusual, IMO...

If I was going for just one Iturbide type, that would be the one I'd look for...(full burns would be cool too...)
