Such a cool motif...does anyone have any history on why the Sunface design was introduced into South and Central American
coin designs ? I bet there is some sort of story to be found...

A sunface design appears on Mexican coinage too, so you can include North America in the list.

Well, the Maya, Aztec and Olmec worshipped the sun. So wild guess it's paying homage to them? Perhaps the sunface was (in a less smiley cartoon fashion) prominent in their temple carvings and paintings.
