I decided that it was time to sell the Green/Newman coin.

    Lost coins,
Are you asking if the pedigree adds value?

Have you not been paying attention for the last few months?
Did you look at any results of the biggest coin auction in twenty years?

I have lost count of how many threads posted on this site which describe how much more money Newman coins have brought than expected.

so how does it work with the ebay fees and all? If it sells for $200, does the charity get two hundred and ebay doesn't charge the fees or does the seller still have to pay fees on a $200 hammer?

Very nice of you. A friend of mine has a 9 year old son with Duchenne (pronounced: due-shen) muscular dystrophy (DMD). Very sad case of it. The Make A Wish group just made his wish and flew him and his dad to Florida for a weeks stay at Legoland. To make it even sadder the kid's mom died of cancer when he was 3 years old. Sure puts things in perspective...

While not the worse example ever, where should I draw the line for linking ones active eBay auctions on the main forum? Does it have to be a charity others aprove of or is my seal enough?

Also trumpeting ones actions even when doing kind deeds takes away much of the shine of said actions at least to me.

IMO, donating the proceeds to ANY charity particularly during the holiday season excuses publicizing a coin auction here.

Why not avoid some hassles and change thread title to :

Screw it. I will just send them a check as I have done in the past.

Auction has been ended. I will keep the coin.

    Merry Christmas and out.

Don't know… I just marked him as a favorite seller and his post reminded me to donate some money to my nephew Brian and his wife Cody who up and moved to Haiti to serve the people a couple years ago. A kind gesture, it was. And a shame that the message was misconstrued.

Now that it is over, while I am extremely sympathetic toward sick children, that particular charity troubles me on a number of levels, but that's a discussion for another time.

I see nothing wrong with promoting a charity auction on this forum. I wish people, including coin folks, were more charitable.

Yeah ... too bad the fun got sucked out of it for the OP as well. I was looking forward to seeing where it ended up.

I was bidding against you Broadstruck. I am dissapointed that the auction was canceled. Do you think if we tell him how much we were willing to bid that he would then send that amount in?

Definitely a case where the meddlesome, self-proclaimed "thread police" should have minded their own business and upped their post count somewhere else. image I hope the OP puts the auction back up so we can all bid for a good cause.

An item auctioned for charity will usually bring more than the items worth because of its intended use.

I understand your frustration MGLICKER but I'm sure you have thicker skin than that.

Can't let a vocal minority derail you like that.

There's a silent majority who nodded with approval at your kind intentions.

    Cool coin btw.

If the naysayers got to you, why not just delete this thread and keep the auction going? I was also watching it and willing to pay more because of the charity aspect.

    Unfortunate.

his coin to do with as he sees fit

considering the charity auctions performed here, e.g. airplanenut's, I didn't see the problem. I will not utilize my "I think" or "maybe" hedging and flatly state this was no different and the complaints should have been dropped lest we have no more charity auctions on the forum or perhaps all be forced to move to giveaways.

I made my annual donation to Make-a-Wish the day that I pulled the sale.

With the advantage of hindsight I would have let the original auction run. Figured at the time that pulling it was the best way to end the truculence.
