It closed in 1861 and burned down in 1878, but the foundation of the Dahlonega mint is the closest to me.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Well, using Google maps suggested routes, Dahlonega comes up closest, with Charlotte close behind, and just ahead of Philadelphia, Ottawa, and Winnipeg, all of which are close to the same distance from here. I don't have a Dahlonega coin, but RYK does, so I'll post a picture of one of his.
The Dahlonega Mint is the closest mint to me. This 1853-D quarter eagle was minted 160 years ago and was auctioned in Stack's George Walton Duplicates sale in June 1963 (50 years ago). Walton is best known today for owning the "missing" 1913 Liberty Head nickel (100 years old this year). The images are courtesy of BluCC Photos.
As I sit here in my mountain home I am about 9 miles as the crow flies from the location of the Dahlonega Mint. And the coin below sits in a safe deposit box just a couple of hundred yards from where it was minted in 1839.

Appropriate since many of my ancestors were gold miners in that region until a mining disaster in 1922.
