What a wonderful example to show what wears down first. This is a study piece.

    I'd say 35/40 (obverse/reverse).

I can't see why it would not grade. I think that VF-30 is about right.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The natural surfaces, patina and details should earn this a VF-35. image

I'll post the PCGS-30/CAC that I just bought from Tom Bush as a comparative example.

    30 or 35.
Is the end of the eagle's beak poorly defined on this coin, or is that normal for the date?
    When in doubt, don't.

It looks softly struck there, rather than worn...if that is typical for the date, I'd be interested to know also.

A couple of things about the pics I posted...there is an ever so slight rim bruise at star 1 that may hold the grade back, but the over all look of the surfaces are much cleaner in hand than these blown up and a bit over exposed images suggest.....I don't feel like there is enough luster for an XF grade, I'd like to see a 30 or 35 personally.

That's a nice coin. The obverse is probably close to a 40, but the reverse a 25 or 30. If you're lucky (and I hope you are) you might get the 40, but I'd guess 35. Either way, a nice coin.

Looks like a solid VF35 to me. I really like it and assuming it has no problems we can't see? It could market-grade XF40 although it's not a true XF piece.

VF35. It's not far at all from an XF.

LOL! I have learned that all the old holders like that rarely make the grade these days. Most that will cross or upgrade have been freed! I would give that coin a 40 before I gave the OP a 40! Much more original. I am on the fence between 30 and 35 from the pictures!

I was watching a vf30 that just closed on eBay tonight...I don't know how it made it into a clean holder.
I don't want to link it, but it might be worth a look if you feel like a good head scratcher...

Huh? Both the old ANACS piece you linked and the OP's coin are quite original, one is not moreso than the other. Just two different flavors of it. To the OP I'd say VF35, and a really nice coin. Bowers, I believe, in one of his many type coin books made mention that he liked the inaugural 1840 dollars a lot for type purposes.

I thought about this one again and looked back at the posts. I thought I should explain why I see this one as a 30. The reverse hurts the grade and there is simply too much wear that is evident to support an EF grade or even a 35. The obverse closer to 35 and the flat and even wear is consistent for a 35 except on LIBERTY- I am not convinced that the strike was that weak based on the appearance, otherwise there would be greater evidence of lustre in protected areas such as in the stars. The reverse usually can only negatively impact the grade and that is what we have here. 30 still seems reasonable
