Do you think only ugly overgraded coins are put in major auctions?

I'm surprised nobody has suggested it's a fake slab. Seems obvious. Fake slab to sell a poor coin for a high price.

The grading services make mistakes. They don't always get it right.
I've seen more egregiuos grades then this. Buy the coin not the plastic.
Eight seconds to grade a coin , eight seconds to stay on a bull.
There's difficulty with both, even the most experienced can come up short
in the rush.

no, but i do think it's reasonable to assert ugly, over-graded coins are put up for auction because they are ugly and over-graded. this one clearly has issues. but, really, i was being facetious with my original comment.

Verdigris on the reverse shield and, moreso, lettering

Very unlikely from Stack's-Bowers, Heritage, or any major coin dealer. Some of my biggest profit flips have been
holding my nose and bidding on a coin that looks horrid in the photos, hoping that the grading company got it right
and it would be nice when seen in-hand. I bought several hundred coins on Teletrade in the late 1990s when their
photos were lacking, even making my objective to study the WORST looking coins based on the photos. I don't
remember ever returning one, as they were all OK or even nice...I tripled my money on a Grant that looked like it had
been in a fire from the photo but in hand the cabin and trees looked like a 3D Viewmaster image.
But then Teletrade improved their photos....

not for me either. it dont look right.
<< <i>Judge the coin 'in hand', pictures can be misleading. Sure, could be overgraded, but condemnation based on a picture is premature. Cheers, RickO >>
But Ricko, I thought "condemnation based on a picture" was standard operating procedure here.
The color scheme does raise concern, though- those colors look like the ones you'd get on a coin after some serious surface alteration.
Wouldn't bid on it.
