There's definitely something caked on the coin. Whatever it is, it refused to budge even after long nights in the acetone spa. I think it's time I upgrade my membership.

Try xylene (xylol). I've found it to be a bit more aggressive than acetone in the solvent department. If the "cake" is organic it will go, bye-bye. However, what may be left staring at you might likewise be what PCGS was bagging it for in the first place.
Interesting that some light residue will keep the coin from grading, but a Chinese merchant slamming into the coin with a hammer and punch is OK. Not a situation I understand.

<< <i>Hard to judge the luster in those pics, but I will guess 58-61 Chopmarked. Looks like a very nice example. >>
I agree with Dave but think its a 58
Pretty dollar, Dan!
Tails, so I have to go with 58.
And very nice Dan,
bob
I think PCGS graded it 61.

I'm probably going to crack this one out, give it a dip and try it again.
Altered surfaces is described by PCGS as "any applied (foreign) substance" to the coin's surface(s). I detect no such substance - just toning.
