Happy 100th Birthday to the 13-S Quarter

dogwooddogwood Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭✭
40,000 mintage, lowest of the circulating common denomination 20th Century US coins.
I don't have one to show anymore, but have had a PC10, and a PC53 briefly.
The certified populations of AG3-VG10 are pretty high and it makes one wonder how the prices have risen a lot of late in those grades, but it's a coin that is always in demand as a rarity.
Mid-grade examples are really under-rated. I saw a raw buckskin toned VF35 at a local show last year that no doubt would have holdered, but didn't have $6500 laying around. Really would have loved that one.
Anyway, Happy Birthday 13-S. Worthy of note.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

But it is also a heavily hoarded date as a result of articles in Numismatic News some years back. It isn't rare or even particularly scarce as a date though some grades may be.
    All glory is fleeting.

My old 13-S Quarter sold at Heritage's Chicago Pre-ANA Auction
to a gentleman seated immediately behind me. Since then, we have
become friends and I know my coin is in a good home and not being
    footballed around.

This is the lowest mintage of any circulating coin in the 20th Century.

Dennis, I would love to see images of your AU 53.

Edit: 291fifth is correct, the only reason the 13-S Dime is scarce is
because its been hoarded for 100 years. Many were saved by the roll
back in the day. I would imagine our Dime Specialist, Dimeman, has
more than his fair share of examples !! It's got just over a half million
Examples struck, and compares favorably with the other key dates of
the series, but the older low mintage dates were not saved to the same
extent as the 13-S was .

I have an AU 50 Dime in my latest set.

Just happened to pick one up recently. Bought it as an AG-03, It's a tiny bit nicer than an average AG, but that's splitting hairs at this point...
