One of the lowest in high grades with 153 coins graded at PCGS, only the 1962-D is lower of all dates and mints in the 1940 to 1964 dates.
Edit to add that as for better PCGS has listed only 4 66+ and a lone one coin as MS67.

It took me about (29) years of continued searching to finally slab a 55-D in PCGS-MS67. Only tougher coins in MS67 in the silver Washington quarter series (based on PCGS pop) are 32-D and 32-S last I checked!

Wondercoin, is your ms67 white or toned ? i hope it is a mint set coin?

My 55-D MS67 is a lightly toned specimen. I'll try to get it pictured in the near future. It is one of the few coins in my silver set that is not pictured now. I submitted it at a PCGS event earlier this year where they were not snapping pics of coins best I know.

Have you tried going to http://coins.ha.com, logging in with a free account and searching previous auction results? I would think there would be plenty to look at there.

I have a couple of 55-D mint sets with the quarters in em, but they're not graded. Here's one...Not very pretty and the others, the toning is NOT pretty

Nick: I will try to get nearly all, or all, of the silver quarters pics up in the next 3-6 months. Plus, one or more of the pics are messed up and I need to fix them (ex: 1938-P looks nothing like that pic).

Well done! I also looked at Poole's set.

Here's something that might revolutionize the way the Washington quarters are collected.

Are there strike deficiencies in the arrows. They appear opposite the high point of Washington's hair
above the ear. You know, the same way the Monticello steps are with the Jefferson nickels.

Before someone cries, "oh no, oh God........don't start that with the quarters.........a new designation.......
.........FULL ARROWS FA or FS for a Full Strike designation. 1939-S PCGS MS67FS.......for quarters.....
I like the sound of that!

You are correct in your belief that the '55-D is a difficult coin in 66. I knew from working in a coin shop for several years and handling dozens of rolls of '55-D quarters that they were not very attractive coins. When I saw this one for sale at a show in late 1996 for $45, I didn't hesitate to buy it. I believe it is either the first or second coin graded as MS66 by PCGS. I have a PCGS Population Report from August 1996 that shows that only one coin had been graded as a 66 at that time. Unfortunately, I don't know when the second one was graded.

It also happens to be one of the most difficult coins to photograph, due to the toning. I have tried many times, using various lighting techniques, and these are the best I have achieved so far.

    Coinman420,

Your '55-D is typical of most found in rolls - they usually appear to have been polished. I have seen many graded MS65 which, like yours, seem to have clean surfaces, but the luster just is so unlike that of any other date that it looks unnatural, which may be why PCGS is reluctant to grade them as 66's.
