I like the 38-D too even though they`re plentiful as all get out

Yeah a more ''common'' key date is the term!! I will then go after the 1921-S and 1921-D in PCGS Fine -12.

Looks like it may have been gently cleaned with baking soda and water back in the 60's (as many of these were then).
Has a warmed over patina (from the cleaning).

    Attractive and smooth.
Glad you are enjoying your coins.

That could be I am not knowledgeable enough to tell. As long as it is in a PCGS holder and does not say anything on the holder then I am fine with it. Especially for a lower priced coin such as this one.

    Looks pretty decent.

    I agree.
That is my purchasing style too- even on questionably toned coins.
Once it is in the PCGS plastic I am good to go.

I agree with the light cleaning but disagree with the "as long as it is in a PCGS holder it is okay with me" view.

I agree with RYK. Every collector needs to think for himself. This requires diligent study and the opportunity to look at LOTS of coins in hand---good, bad, and ugly.

I should have added, with Secure Plus.

I have every single submission Secure Plus box checked now. I've yet to see a PCGS Secure Plus coin that I wouldn't own based on my own belief "PCGS missed something".
Until I do, if it's PCGS (SP) and I like the coin, I am good to go.

  • I understand you guys don't like my comment about as long as PCGS but for me it is OK...it would not be OK for a coin over 1000$ but for 95$ (plus it is a gift from a family member) I am fine with this!! I love the look of the coin. Here in Canada there is a 1936 dot 10 cent that was PCGS SP-66 (ex Belzberg coin you can find it on Heritage auctions in the past sales section) and now is a PCGS SP-68 and the coin has been dipped this would be a BIG NO for me this is a 200 000$ ++ coin....I had the chance to buy this coin instead of my 1921 50 cent piece and opted out because of this. And believe I had wanted such a coin for many many many years...so no I do my homework for more expensive coins for sure. Most people do not know this fact about this major rarity in Canada (only 5 known and 2 are in the Ottawa currency museum).

Here in the United States, a cleaned coin is a cleaned coin, and if one wants to progress as a collector, one needs to recognize one when he sees one. Buying cleaned coins is okay, but, in the United States, we tend to pay a bit less for them.
  • RYK:

Same here in Canada but for a 95$ coin that I love the look I am more than fine with it and who can for sure say it was cleaned??? This was a gift from a family member (my birthday is in less than 2 weeks so it is a birthday present) so I am happy with it no matter what. But I respect your knowledge for sure and must say thanks for helping.

I'll take a NGC or ANACs coin if it looks better than the pcgs one. No kool aid for me

Good coins are not bad. Bad coins are not good. Ownership adds a point and I'm on my own path. If it fills a void, it's better than nothing for the time being.

I would to in some cases but living in Canada and so much trouble to have a coin graded in your country I prefer just going PCGS right off the bat. I would in every single case have non PCGS coins transferred to PCGS holders because I simply like the product they offer better...that is simple capitalism buy what you like because you have options..chose your favorite one for YOU....and that would be PCGS. Or for hamburgers I would prefer A&W over McDonald's....why because that is what suites my inner needs better. I also prefer diet Coke over diet Pepsi so I go for Coke 99% of the time and 1% I have no other choice but Pepsi.

Matrix1980, this is where your logic is faulty.
Let me explain... you mention you prefer PCGS graded coins, I get that.
But to take an ANACS coin and cross it with PCGS- remember the coin remains the same.

You like A&W hamburgers over McDonalds. Alright. But according to your train of thought, the McDonalds hamburger is wrapped in A&W wax paper and then you appreciate it more.
    The coin is the same.
    The hamburger is the same.

It's only the plastic (or, wrapper) it is contained in that changes.

You may feel it is the same my GUT tells me always to go for PCGS I trust my GUT instincts and so should you...trust your own gut and buy what you like and do not listen to me...we are all different and I enjoy my freedom of choice...so should you!! I will stick with what I enjoy and again so should you. I love seen a coin in a PCGS holder it is like art either you love it or you don't. To me a coin graded by PCGS looks like fine art.

Sage advice, for the most part.
Difficult to get past, "I enjoy freedom of choice..." yet you only choose PCGS with a complete disregard for the coins that may appear in NGC holders, for example.

I do like your enthusiasm and in my book that makes up for a lot of misinformation.

Why hate on another fellow collector....you love the hobby your way I love the hobby my way!! All this non sens about coin holders been better or not....I go for the look of the coin and I PREFER the look of the PCGS holders....maybe the full transparent holders and hologram have the child in me jump on them....but who knows maybe Dr.Phil (he would probably ask me how does that make you feel....lollll) but I rather trust my gut than anything else.

I am sorry you think my having a conversation with you is a sign of "hate" toward you.

I have apparently failed you as this was not my intent whatsoever.
With that said, so there are no further miscommunications on my part, I will bow out of this one.

You misunderstood me I did not feel that way at all you misread me. We are simply having a conversation that is all. No need to run off I don't get upset over things like this I have a open mind but chose to do what I do.

O.K. I am going to take the bait and get into the discussion. Please explain to me why PCGS would not have noticed this coin as cleaned and put it in a genuine holder? How come 2 graders who had the coin in hand could not detect what so many here see from a picture? Don't they know what cleaning with baking soda looks like if it was done so long ago?

The coin is market acceptable. There are many, many cleaned coins that are in holders. The degree (or harshness) of the cleaning, the grade of the coin, and its overall appearance for the grade come into play when making the decision to BB or holder a coin.

O.K. - I have received some great PM's on my questions which has led to another question. How can you tell that the coin in question was washed in baking soda? Does it have visible hairlines from the pictures? What gives it away in your opinion? What does a warmed over patina mean?

Wonder if your 38d was in these bags?

While I agree the coin has been cleaned, I don't think you can't say with certainty, based on the photos alone, that it was cleaned with baking soda.

I do believe that, with much experience, a good guess can be made as to what might have been done to a coin based on its over all appearance. And I think that's what braddick was getting at.

Here are the ebay images, FWIW.
