Here is a contemporary-clipped 1864 half dollar. It was sawed partially in half then worked in half to make it a "Quarter" dollar. The wear on the edge shows circulation equal to the faces of the coin. It is a bit of Civil War history.

Cool piece. There were a couple of Large Cents found cut in half like that at a civil war prison camp archealogical dig near where I live. Camp Lawton near Millen, Ga. It's on the site of present day Magnolia Springs State Park. They had some displayed at the Georgia Southern Universtiy museum in Statesboro, Ga. (the next largest town south of Millen).
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
<< <i>I wish they would have cut it at 6 and 12 to show mintmark, if any. Neat half. >>
I wonder if the way the cut was aligned to split the denomination like that was deliberate or random?
<< <i>id like to see the whole quarter. it looks kinda neat >>
It's half of a half dollar, hence a "quarter"
<< <i>It would be really neat if someone came up with the other "quarter". >>
I would definitely be a buyer, since I now own this piece.

I bet it would be harder to find an (otherwise) pristine proof Seated half that has been chopped in half.
