Great colors-sure looks like it has been heat treated doesn't it? I was an ironworker by trade for over 35 years and had to heat a lot of steel beams to take out bends in them and we would get that same color at the heated spots.

I've seen this effect from application of heat and sulfur (burning matches).

You can practically smell it from the photos. Still doesn't stop people from bidding these up far over their diminished worth, unfortunately...

Pretty, but it does look a bit baked.

I wonder how consistent the TPGs are with detecting artificially toned pieces.

Looking at his other and previous auctions, that azzhat is destroying some wonderful coins. Bastidge. There's a warm, cozy place in hell for people like this.

I have one or two 960's with blue toning but certainly nothing as strange looking as that. Seems rather unusual that two coins dated a few years apart could tone so similarly. image

Eh, they're his coins. He can pop 'em in the oven for some lovin' if he wants to.

But yeah. I know what you mean.

Those are interesting counterstamps on that 1807, all AT issues aside. I've never seen any like that. Pretty cool, if the counterstamps aren't as spurious as the toning.

The raw material in the form of cleaned/polished 960 reis coins was already out there. He's just doing the artwork.
  • Of course, he's free to make and sell the coins and people are obviously willing and able to pay extreme prices for them, but these are ruined (and shouldn't be described as "original colors").

There are 4 of those Minas Gerais counterstamps in an upcoming heritage auction, plus another on ebay right now.
