OT- Stock certificates

coinkatcoinkat Posts: 22,791 ✭✭✭✭✭
While this is OT, I thought there might be some that collect Stock Certificates- I would think older preferred share stock certificates would be more desirable and perhaps more valuable- keep in mind we are talking the 1920s not the 1950s or later- any thoughts?

    my thought:

if there are 7 billion people give or take on this blue ball of ours

then if just 1% of them agreed with you that means around 70 million people would be collectors

if just 1/10th of a percent agreed, still 7 million people would agree

and on the back end, i've heard it only takes 2 at auction....

As in many collectibles , there are mainstream and popular subjects .
Two of the larger areas for certificates are railroad and oil companies .
Then , like coins , one gets into varieties , denomination , signatures ,
common stock ,preffered , bond , issued certs , not issued , issued and
cancelled ,etc . In the old days , certificates were filled out and mailed
to the owner . Now , they are electronic blips .
The most obvious certificate available for coin related companies
(if requested) is Collectors Universe . (CLCT ) Another is Dallas Gold
and Silver Exchange , (DGSE) I believe there may be others , who are
    part of a conglomerate .

Hello, I collect those certificates that have cool names..............or those that are early companies that might have merged with others........I never pay a lot and don't buy because of collectiblity ( I frame them and hang them).......

I would add shipping to this list. Share certificates with ships, sails or steam, are very desirable.

    a story...stock cert's n me...
when i married my ex...we were handed 2 shares of ibm dated 1976
both names on the cert's we're deceased...go figuire we were told of the extreme hassle of loops to go through.
so when her grandmother passed i found a box of indentures...most dating from 1750 to 1812...i recall one of 50 acres in new york city
also in the box was a book...i think it was titled...the thomas watson story
well her grandpa found out we were in possession and demanded such box with a very serious tone shall we say.
upon returning such box i got to meet her grandpa and informed him i read that book
he then confirmed his association to thomas watson n him
    get this one....
his mom...my ex's great grandmother dated thomas in high school...even asked her hand in marriage
she sorrily declined as she had interest in another
    gets good here
so thomas countered her an offer of her 1st born to be taken under his wings at a start up company he was to found
    yup
    you guessed it
thomas watson was the founding father of I.B.M.
    so needless to say
when it comes to stocks i get a lil smile inside
even got to meet a hand picked by him IBM specialist...
he lead the install and overseeing maintenance of rockwell's desoto factory in san fernando valley calif.
he also proclaimed his apprentice years of being paid soley in IBM stocks
sorry if i hijacked a lil
    oh
her grandfather's last name "STROBRIDGE" entitles the ex to be a "daughter of the american revolution"
so yeah...somewhere the ex has 2 shares of IBM stock
everything in life is but merely on loan to us by our appreciation....lose your appreciation and see

    Great story! Thanks for sharing.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

    Yup good story.
Funny how we all get that "tingly" feeling.... and then there's the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey would say.
And we all come back to the "real world".

Railroad, shipping and mining stocks seem popular
