    I'd need to see the context to confirm, but I would assume they are referring to coins from the Papal States prior to their assimilation into Italy in 1871 and/or the recognition by Italy of the Vatican City as a separate independent state in 1929.

    The Krause catalogues have a good representation of Papal States coins - unlike the coinages for some states, which stop at 1750, the Papal States entry in the catalogue is comprehensive back to 1601. For Papal States coins earlier than that, you'd probably want a specialist catalogue, which would probably be in Italian.

    This is the reference I've heard of in English:
    PAPAL COINS / Allen G. Berman
    Papal Coins is the first complete one volume catalogue of the circulating coinage of the Popes. Incorporating recent scholarship and discoveries, such as the Tiber Hoard, it spans overpccover.gif (8742 bytes)1,200 years of Papal coinage, both in Italy and at Avignon. Each listing is described, along with a complete transcription of legends found in their most complete forms. All entries are cross referenced to authoritative sources and collections, including the Vatican coin cabinet. Valuations are assigned to the over 3,500 known types, hundreds of which will be found illustrated in the extensive plates. The evolution of Papal coinage is explained in clear, concise terms in the introduction, both from artistic and political perspectives. The coinage of each Pope is also introduced with a brief biography to place it in its historical context. Features include:
    * Complete listings for Popes, Antipopes, Anonymous & Senatorial issues
    * Hundreds of illustrations
    * Tables of Monograms, Mintmasters' marks, Papal and auxiliary arms.
    255 pp., ill., 77 plates, hc........................59.50
    The above book has been granted Impramatur and Nihil Obstat by the Catholic Church.

    I'd agree with both of the above posts. Berman's book would be best for identifying the coins (Berman is one of the two most common references cited for papal coins, the other being Muntoni, which is expensive and in Italian), though I would hesitate in using it as a price guide due to its age. For that, Krause would probably be better. I will note though that I have not tracked papal coin prices in relation to these references, so I cannot say how accurate the listed prices are.
