OT: What is a good Printer/Scanner?

I just purchased a new Dell XPS. This thing is a beast, 1TB hard drive (??, I did have a 70 GB was told it's 20+ times larger).

My scanner is too old to use. I need some help getting a new all in one.

Looking for a decent one, I perfer HP (the ink is easier to find around here.) I would like to spend under $100.

I'm not a techonology person, so advice would be appreciated. I do know not to buy the cheapest one you can find.

  • Well if you need to scan PSA cards you need to get a scanner with a CCD scanning element. Those can handle depth where regular scanners can't.

I have a Canon Pixma print/scan, I like it. You can get them for under $100...I have seen them on sale for $79. There are 4 or 5 models also.

I'm not sure if it has that CCD element but here's an example of a scan in a PSA holder:

Epson V30 or V330 (if you want to do slides)....best on the market for the money! I love the clear, sharp images!

  • It is impossible to find Cannon Ink locally. At least in Lima, OH.

I will have to check in to teh Epson ink, I think it's easy to find.

If anyone else has any suggestions, let me know.

    Thanks so far,

I read right over the "printer" part....the Epson I have is only a scanner. I always believe in keeping them separate because combos tend to be of less quality. Good for multiple uses, not quality for any one thing.

    Yes.

I have an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner that I got on a closeout; it is spectacular. Sometimes, it is so spectacular that it shows too much of the card and a minor flaw looks worse than it is. image

Here are some samples of slabbed cards from all three companies:

I no longer attempt to print in high quality. All the photo's I ever printed eventually degraded, so I have a cheap (not the cheapest) HP printer. Buy Ink online and it's here in two days.

Recently I began selling cards on eBay and needed a new scanner.

Epson Perfection V300 is AWESOME about $80.00.

I too stay away from combos as well.

    Good luck!

I do work with negatives and the Espon V700 is a terrific piece of equipment, for both photos and scanning packs..

    Hi,

You live in Lima (Home of Glee!)?

What radio stations do you listen to? (I am in the industry)

I just got an HP Photosmart but have not had a chance to use it yet. Got a very good price from Staples with an additional $25 coupon that I received in the mail.

I too have V330...awesome CCD scanning element (the most sensitive in its class by far) the photonegative and slide features are great, but it has one major fault. Well two if you include the fact that it's not an all-in-one, it's only a scanner...but it's only major issue is its light source. The forelighting in this model is provided by 10 or 20 small LED lights. This is just fine for traditional cardstock and items with non-reflective and non-refractive finishes; however, it's terrible for modern shiny cards as the individual lights create halos and streaks across the metallic and reflective finishes. Most HP scanners and all-in-ones have a decent quality CCD element and a single Xenon tube light source. Whatever you get, CCD and single source lighting will make for the best all-inclusive scanning at the home-use level.

    Hope this helps.

The V300 is available from Epson for $79.99 (
Epson V300) or via Amazon with FREE S/H at $84.86 (via Amazon).

Here's a scan on the Epson V300 at 200 dpi:

I've had the Epson V300 Photo for about two years and I love it. I am sure the pics could come out even better if I played around with the settings.

Glee? What is that? The Horrible TV show?

I mostly listen to 98.9 The Bear out of Ft. Wayne. It's the only Rock station in the area, unless you only want to listen to 1960's-1970's era.

    93.1 sometimes. It's ESPN.

I think I'll probably just look in to an Epson scanner.

    Thanks for the help.

Well, I'm glad you listen to WWSR - The Fan (that is our station).

What about "The Eagle" WEGE? Too adult contemporary?

Don't listen to Clear Channel - they are the bad guys. image

Still trying to get the Photosmart Premium to connect to the desktop for scanning.

If you have any modern cards, like I said, I'd go toward a different model. If you'll be scanning only vintage cardboard, the Epson line can't be beaten.

Verses a single light source scanner, with no where near as nice of a scanning element, with no streaking.

  • BunchOBull, I'm not really in to the modern shiny stuff. I only have a few cards like that in my collection.

The only new stuff I have is for my HOF sets. Some people had cards from their playing days, then nothing until 2000.

My autograph collection consists of 1960-s till the 1980's. Thanks for the advice on the new cards, but it shouldn't be an issue for 20 or so years.

    Thanks everyone for the input,

    Dave
