What's the best hobby box for fun and return?

Looking to have some fun for Christmas and thought about blowing a couple hundred on some hobby boxes. It's just me and my wife and she likes to help open the packs too. image

In your opinion, what has seen the best ROI? What are the hot sellers?

I've broken quite a few A&G boxes this year, as well as Bowman Chrome, and Drafts and Prospects this year, but haven't been overly impressed.

Couple years ago I busted a Legendary Cuts box and got a Mays Auto which I traded for 200.00 + a signed Griffey Jr UDA AS Bat. Had fun doing that, so figured I'd give it another try.

No real year limitations or parameters, just looking to have some fun and hopefully get some interesting stuff.

I'm not sure how you feel about O-Pee-Chee, but 1983 OPC baseball boxes are $70 at BBCE. You're likely to pull multiple Gwynn & Sandberg rookies from a single box as it's a small set. This is one of my personal favorites.

  • You cant go wrong with a 2011 Bowman Chrome box or two.

If you are open to football you can get a box of 1989 Score from BBCE and have a shot at some great RCs.

These are my suggestions for boxes from the current year:

    2011 Bowman Draft Baseball
    2011 Topps Chrome Baseball
2011 Topps Triple Threads Baseball (I personally shy away from high-end boxes, but this has done well this year)

    2011 Topps Football (basic Topps)

    2011-12 Score Hockey
2011-12 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey

  • For vintage,

-I like late 70's topps basketball. Small sets, 132 cards. Great player selection.....Jabbar, Malone, Walton, Maravich, etc. $9, $8 a pack, you'll probably get at least 1/2 your money back.

-Baseball. 85 Donruss was pretty cool, the last box I bought was $65, pulled two Pucketts and a Clemens.

-Football. 1980 and 83 Topps are pretty neat. More economical than 84 or 86 at $450 or $500 a box (depending on wax or cello).
  • If you are into MMA, the 2011 Topps UFC Moment of Truth is a decent purchase. I just bought 4 boxes for $200. There are 3 "hits" per box. I opened the boxes yesterday and sold one of my 12 hits overnight on the bay for $140. I have another hit that will sell for $50 easy. So out of the 640 total cards I got, I can sell just 2 and make almost all my money back.

But the key to these boxes is you have to be a UFC fan.....otherwise you are just buying pictures of half naked random men. image
