Cobb Check book

On TV tonight was the Great Big Auction or something of that nature and one of the items was a intact Ty Cobb checkbook with 132 signed checks. The selling price ended up being $90K and sure there was a 20% hammer at least coming to a total of $108K. Do you think this was a good buy? I think it was a bad one because there where a lot of damaged checks and Ty Cobb checks are so plentiful out there.

    And with the attitude of the lady selling it I was hoping her reserve of $90K was not meet. And when it was over she was all pissed off saying it was worth way more then that...sorry I disagree.

    You figure you can sell each check for $800-$1000 (estimating) so for 132 checks, thats $105,600 to $132,000. You said alot of them were damaged, so they'd sell probably closer to $800 each (if not lower). So in the end, if he is looking to resell them, no, it's not a good buy. Still an entire Ty Cobb check book is pretty cool..

    Morning,

    I watched that, what a Tool that Lady and her daughter were. I think they should have been Super Happy that it met the $90K Reserve! The Check Book was trashed and has to have a very limited collector's base. If it hadn't been on that TV show with all of those Psuedo Celebrities trying to get on camera, it probably would have brought in the $30-$40K range on a good day. And the Hollywood Drama and Artificial Pauses between bids almost nauseated me to the point of changing chanels!

    Perhaps it has something to do with the intact check book. For example, I can have an unopened cello pack of cards that is worth more than any possible realistic arrangement of the cards inside if they were sold separately.

    Tivo/DVR Baby Tivo/DVR !! Then you can skip over all the stupid crap....which is what I should have done !!! Everytime I watch TV in real time I say to myself: "Self": This Time I mean it, this is Last time I am going to do this!!!

    The sad thing is that I have a DVR and use it constantly. Unfortunately Thursday night already has recordings on both DVR channels all night long. I would have watched it over the air but totally forgot. image
