About to do a wax break on 90 Upperdeck and 86 Donruss

Hope you all had Happy Thanksgiving. Is anyone reading this wile having Turkey leftovers? lol

So I just came back from a card store - picked up a Fleer Ultra 91 set in a sealed box. I will be openeing and pulling out the key cards.

Also got another Darryl Stawberry 83 Topps traded but this ones for my friend whos favorite team is the Mets and he adored Straw.

Also got...

90 Upperdeck wax box - Only key card really is the Sammy Sosa and that only list for $3. *Crosses fingers for Ted Williams auto*... yeaaahhh right!

86 Donruss I'm looking forward to pulling out at least 2 Canseco's, a Fred Mcgriff, Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens and Paul O Neils rookie.

Ill update here with some pictures of the pulls in a little - let the wax break begin!

  • Pecan pie for me! Cool gesture with the Strawberry. Some info though, 1991 Upper Deck had the Ted Williams. 1990 had Reggie Jackson, not sure what series though. Good luck on the 1986 Donruss!

After opening these, I came out with these key cards -

I got at least 1 Canseco, Paul O Neil, Roger Clemens, Nolan Ryan a,d on the literally the last pack - Fred Mcgriff. Whew, that was close.

Lets try The Upperdeck now - there's nothing in there really exciting but for $15, why not.

Absolutely nothing. So I'm glad I at least pulled 2 Samy Sosa's but I really wanted a Griffey from this box. Ive never owned 1. All these cards can be found in $1 box at a card store or show I'm sure. None the less, it was only $15 and I had fun opening them.

Heres some picture worthy cards from both boxes.

Thanks for the post and the pictures. These might not be big dollar cards, but I opened a bunch of these packs and it's great to see the cards again!

  • Thanks guys. Considering what I paid, it wasn't really worth it but I still had a blast. Ive always wanted to break open 86 Donruss. Glad I got that one out of my system.

I spent every dime I had as a kid on cards and it is such a shame they are worthless.

I bet you can't get 10 cents for some of those cards and it really stinks that is how it all played out.

To think an 89 Griffey Jr. debuted at $15 and went as high as $3,000 in a PSA 10 was just awesome. The sad part is that same card is less then $300 and a raw copy is lucky to get $15 is just nuts. A true round trip.

One word of advice, get a pack of 100 card savers from your local card shop if you are ever breaking down boxes or sets. This board is full of really high end collectors and I can't even begin to imagine laying out raw cards on the carpet without them being protected by a card saver. A small investment that always pays off.

You are going to need to step it up if you are collecting the 80's. You need to bust out the Tiffany or you are essentially throwing good money after bad. There are no Topps cards from the 80's that are worth your time unless they are Tiffany or Gem Mint PSA 10.

I have two 1990 Fleer rack cases...are they worth the cost of shipping?

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

    NO!
  • Thats good advice about the card savers dpeck. Its just that these cards aren't really worth anything and i opened this more for nostalgic purposes. When I was a kid, I couldn't afford this stuff so now when I get a little bit of money, I like to open junk wax while having a few beers. Only reason why I really laid them out was to take a photo for this site. When I go through this stuff, yes they go on the rug but only the first really - every other card that has some value to me I just keep stacking on top of that first one so they really don't touch the rug. After this photo was taken - I put my $5 and up cards in a penny sleeve and then into a top loader and my $1-4 cards go into my baseball card binder with the other ones. The cents cards go into those card plastic cases that hold around 150 cards. I have a few of those - and the commons go into those 800-1000 count cardboard boxes or at this point - my girlfriends show box she gave me a few weeks back because Ive run out of room. Totally forgot to pick some up this week.

Drinking some beers opening junk wax does sound fun.

The reason I say have some card savers on hand is real simple. You could be opening a set of 1989 Fleer Glossy and pull a Ken Griffey Jr. PSA 10 that raw could have been a $35 card. If raw and put in a card saver and then sent to PSA and gets 10 for a grade it can turn into a $1,000+ card. Never take any chances opening raw stuff without card savers ready.
