1989 Uppdeck Wax Box Rip - Finds

So i went to a cardstore yesterday - I came across upperdeck 89 wax box. It was already opened along with a sign that read $3 per pack, Griffey Rookie.

I counted the packs and there was 30 left. I defintely wasnt going to pay 90 for an open box and especially with only 30 out of 36 left.

My first instinct was to offer 60 but I was thinking there going to counter offer probably so I said $50 (low ball I know but hey, times are tough)
They came back with $55 and I said sure.

Anyways, got home and ripped them open. I pulled out:

2 Griffeys
2 John Smoltz
2 Barry Bonds
1 Ryne Sanburg
1 Don Mattingly
1 Cal Ripken and that was it!

Rest were all commons - I made out pretty good but where the heck were the Randy Johnsons, Gary Sheffield, Mark Mcgwires??

Anyways - any thoughts? Comments?

BTW - This is my second 89 Upperdeck box. Last time I purchased an open box about 2 months ago. 23 packs for $30 and I pulled out

2 Griffeys (again)
1 John Smoltz
1 Barry Bonds
3 Cal Ripkens
1 Roger Clemens
1 Mike Schmidt
1 Nolan (Rangers)
1 Nolan (astros)
2 Omar Vizquel
1 Tony Gwynn

Honestly at this point - I just wanted the Griffeys. Anytime I can pull 2 out of a box, I'm good with that. No more 89 Upperdeck for me. I'm done.

  • Boxes go for $49, so you did not lowball the seller.

Thoughts? You did great! You made all of your money back, and then some, with the two Griffeys, assuming that they don't have any major flaws.

  • Thanks!

But I have to disagree with you. Upperdeck high numbers sealed wax box go for $60-70. Low Numbered boxes sell for about $90 on average. Ive been checking them out but I refused to pay that much. I think I got a good deal yesterday. Even $60 would of been good.

BBCE has high number boxes for $49.

Edited to add: TBP beat me to it. Congrats on the two Griffeys. I have never pulled two in a box but back in the day I did get three Jerome Waltons in one pack! I was in Jr High heaven.

  • Is that including shipping too?

That would be an amazing purchase if that was the total.

As far as the 3 Jerome Waltons in 1 pack - sorry lol

Hopefully you got them when they were $15 each back in like 1990. That card dropped down to 15 cents quicker than Brian Taylors Career.

I've opened 5 boxes of Lo# '89 Upper Deck and only two boxes contained Griffeys. One box had three, the other just one. You got very lucky. One box had ZERO Rookies in it. Nada.
2.5 is pretty much my speed.
  • 3 Griffeys in 1 would of been amazing.

Dont feel too bad - I recently bought 2 boxes of 92 Bowman and in each box I pulled a Mariano Rivera (but one was damaged!. Also I only pulled out 1 Mike Piazza out of the 2 boxes. 3 Chipper Jones, 1 Jim Thome, 1 Manny Ramirez, 1 Manny Ramirez Foil and the rest - little $2-3 cards. What I waste I thought. Its not worth it to buy 92 Bowman in a wax box. You can get the set cheaper or just buy the single cards.

At least the 3 Griffeys in the same box made up for some of the other slack.
