What is the one card in your collection that you would keep?

If you had to pick only one card in your collection that you could keep, which one would it be and why?

For me, it would be my autographed 1986 Topps FB Walter Payton. I had it signed in person when I was a kid, the year after Payton retired. He was the greatest to me and I was a few feet away from him on the other side of table while he was signing a card that came out of my pile of well handled football cards. I have many cards that are have higher monetary value than that one, but none can compare when it comes to actual sentimental value.

I would keep my 1968 Mickey Mantle that my father gave to me. I also have many more that worth more money buy for sentimental value I would have to go with that one.

  • For my wedding present my wife gave me a perfectly centered '69 Mantle PSA 6. Since she'd kill me if I ever got rid of that one, I'll have to keep it! :-)
  • Mantles last card was 1968^

He didnt even play in 68 but the only reason his card came out was because he announced his retirement right before the season - after the cards were already printed.

Im sure you probably meant the 1968 card.

As for my choice, it would be my Babe Ruth 1933 Goudey (yellow version). No sentimental value but just solely for the obvious reason. The price.

My PSA 8 O-pee-chee Wayne Gretzky rookie. Just because I have always loved that card since I was a kid and I am finally able to afford a high-grade copy of it. That being said, when the day comes that I can buy a PSA 9 copy of it I will of course sell this 8 to help foot the bill.

But he DID have a 1969 card. Make sure you do your research....

  • Oh boy, my apologies! Youre absolutely correct. I meant he didn't play in 69. Sorry about that one. For some reason I couldnt remember how the 69 looked.

If Mantle didn't have a '69 card then what's this?

You're close...Mantle did play the full '68 season. But because he announced his retirement just before the start of the '69 season (in March), Topps had already printed a card for him in the '69 set. Topps released the card anyway, though they did include a blurb on the back about Mickey retiring. Thus, Mantle has a true "last card' showing his complete career stats, something most players of the era (Aaron, Mays, Musial, Ford, Munson etc...) don't have.

No worries, I admit it can be a little confusing. image

'64 Topps Giants Hank Aaron card in lousy condition.

it goes with the SI article, L.A. Times Sports Page and various other objects of affection which were assembled in 1974 after he broke Babe's record.

all of the commerative items have been stored in the same folder for decades and occasionally get a peak in April if i'm in the mood to excavate the box in which they are kept.

If you change all your '1968's to '1969', you're correct. He played 144 games in 1968, but retired in Spring Training 1969.

  • I would keep the 1953 Topps Roy Campanella that my dad gave me for Christmas back in the early '90s. It started me on my vintage card collection and, more importantly, got me interested in baseball history in general.

If I were to pick just one to keep, it would be this 79 Payton; he's my favorite athlete of all time. I pulled this card from a pack in the fall of 1979. It has followed me through a dozen moves, college, graduate school, etc. It's one of the few cards from this set that I took care of and that I still have with me today. I submitted it as part of a group sub here on these boards about 1.5 years ago.

If I could keep two cards, the second would be this 57 Topps Ernie Banks. I grew up hearing stories about Banks from dad; he would talk about Banks' lightning fast wrists and bat speed. The 57 T is my favorite of all Banks cards:

I'm tempted to go with artistlost and go with my '79 OPC Gretzky but the '54 Topps Gordie Howe is a card I never get tired of staring at.
  • My Vezina is the one card I won't sell. It was my first card and I bought only because my cousin wanted to win the Vezina trophy when we were kids. About a week after he told me that I found this in a comic shop.

One other card I hold dear is my 1970 OPC Munson rookie in PSA 9, highest graded with no equals. Sadly I'd consider selling it for the right price. image

I have a few cards that I price much higher than I normally would, so I guess thats the closest to a card I wouldnt want to part with (or at least someone has pay good $$ for it)

below is an example of one of many...

to the average PreWar collector it looks like a normal W575-1 card, they are not common but far from rare

But this is not a normal W575-1 card, the font shows that it is a Frankenstein card, the font is exactly like a E135 group, and the design is like the E121 group (W575-1 included)
... PS. it is also not a E135 blank back with the number scuffed off, "High Pockets" Kelley is not in that set and wasnt even in the majors then

There have only been 2 examples discovered from this series (the other is a heavily trimmed Walter Schang)

doesnt get much rare that this... thats the stuff I like image

Even though it is modern, there are not too many of these floating around.
