Crazy Prices for this 8.5

The normal 20 to 40% mark up isn't applying here, closer to 300%!!!!!!! Nice card though, so is it a set registry thing or are 8.5s gaining ground on 9 prices.

when applied properly, the 8.5 grade serves as a bridge between a "very strong" PSA 8 or a "borderline" PSA 9.

i think the market is speaking volumes when it comes to this concept, as i've seen some pretty hefty prices for the grade, as well as disasters for cards which don't appear to fit the grade.

i have several 8.5's in my own collection since jumping on the bandwagon, but i've also been very selective about the cards, not the flips.

BTW, that Clemente is on my watch list, too. image
  • A nice 8 will usually go for $300-$350 (at least that was the case a year or two ago when I bought mine). So roughly double that, for what PSA deems to be "a high end 8".

Sweet card, and an excellent result for the seller. This wasn't just a case of two people who had to have it, either. Five people bid $500 or more. Maybe more, since there could have been snipes that didn't fire.

Edited to add that I just now realized this auction isn't even done yet!!! image

a lot of truth in that statement.

For me, im a centering fan. when i see an "old flip" PSA 8 up that im interested in, i think to myself ... when this was graded and there were no half point grades, this card was too good for a 7, but not good enough for a 9 Slab on that day.

The 8.5 grade "premium" also varies based on which set it is in and what the populations are of 8s and 9s.

There are plenty of examples of PSA 8.5s going between 2x-3x PSA 8 price in VCP.

Yes but this card is not tough to find in either PSA 8 or 9. Typically the 8.5s that bring tons are because not many 9's exist.

I think this is a regrade candidate that people are in love with.

  • This may sound stupid, but why is shipping $10.00?

When you add insurance, signature confirmation, and regular shipping charges, the $10 shipping charge isn't too far off!!! You think that is high, PWCC is charging $30 for one single graded card!!! Why you may ask?? He bases his shipping charge on the price that the card should attain. That in turn determines how much the insurance is. The higher the value, the more expensive the insurance. $10 for a $20 common is high. $10 for a $800 card isn't off the wall at all.

Ahhh...I thought insurance was added afterwards, just so you know how much to insure it for. Thanks for the info!

I sold a Jordan rookie for $1,225 a year or so ago and offered free fully insured shipping. The actual shipping charges were $17 with priority mail and full insurance.
  • That is really a nice looking Clemente and the centering is excellent, I can see why the card is showing alot of interest.

  • I am officially on board with Morgoth's opinion. There have to be a few people that are pretty confident this card is eventually going to end up in a PSA 9 holder. Up to $771 now!!!

I think you guys should be cheering this along! Big prices paid for auctions is good for most of you!

I see what you're saying, but it is and it isn't. It is definitely problematic when I am trying to buy a card like that. image

And it could just as easily be cracked out and resubmitted donly to receive an 8 too.

This card was originally sold by 4SC in August, 2011 for $625 on a best offer basis. With VCP showing
8s at $287 and 9s at roughly $1675 I would have expected it to fetch between $575 and $862 (between
2x-3x of the PSA 8 price).

My bet is that it ends in the $840s.

Final price was $771. My wild guess was way to high.
