Chicago Sun Times show reviews...

Anyone have any??

Comments

  • A lot of buyers, not much to buy though. A lot of the same cards and dealers that were at the National. I did find a few decent raw cards that I will submit.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

Not much in terms of raw sets or groups. Plus a bunch of dealers that continue to insist that pricing cards 50% over VCP is a good business model.

  • 50% over VCP...they must have plenty of money, don't buy new cards and are in the museum business on the side.

I just got home and agree with these comments.

Luckily I did not bring as many $ as normal. And I hit 4 of the 5 things I was looking for. So successful to some extent.

I did not purchase anything random or impulsive because there really was not anything that I thought I had to have. What I am saying is things were priced too high.

After those four National League games, Gorman Thomas was never the same, and neither were the Brewers, and come to think of it neither was I.

  • While waiting for Willie Mays not to sign my card I had lot of time to walk around... IMO the show kind of sucked there was more people selling jerseys and other odd stuff. I was very disappointed there was no BBCE - probably saved me some money - there was a complete lack of wax unless I really missed it.

I'm starting to think the local 100-200 table type shows might be better than some of the larger shows out there in terms of finding deals. I've been to smaller shows where folks were willing to sell below market just to avoid the hassle of ebay or having the sales show up in their paypal account. Didn't attend this show though.

How good was this show (autograph guests excluded)???

Well, I went all three days, probably checked out each table/setup at least a half dozen times... and buying one of these was easily my most significant acquisition!

Yes, I'm happy with my purchase, but was otherwise overwhelming unimpressed with the show!

There must have been an unusually high amount of trading during set up. Still wouldn't have expected it to be that cleaned out though.

I think smaller shows like once every couple months would do well nowadays, especially here in SoCal, because the table fees wouldn't be so astronomical. The table fees for the Chicago show were almost as much as the National. In a way, I don't blame the sellers for asking so much for their cards since they're in the hole at least a grand between table, travel and hotel but their prices still need to be competitive. The local shows are better sometimes because there's not as much overhead and a lot of time it's just your local guy who wants to sell his cards so he doesn't have to put them on ebay. I kind of the miss the days that you could go to multiple shows every weekend at a hotel, high school or convention.

My first review was a little one sided. On the plus side, the show traffic was heavy. TONS of people, I don't believe I've seen a show that crowded in quite awhile. Even Friday night was crowded.
