Auction overload?? Anyone else experiencing it??

...just curious.....seems like I have gotten a Sears catalog sized auction catalog for the past month straight!! With all these auctions going on, has anybody gotten burned out on them yet?

  • I cannot agree with you more! I think that is why I missed the Legendary Auction tonight. I think subconsciously I zoned out. Unfortunately, there are some good deals out there right now. I missed a real good non sport set that I would have paid twice as much for.

Paul.....all I did was win some items thru each one of them. Now my PO Box gets flooded with these things!! And ThreePutt, I couldn't agree with you more!! Legendary had a 1963 Topps Astronaut grouping. Just the one PSA 10 in the set alone was worth what the entire grouping sold for! It is almost to the point where "enough already"!! I used to scoff at REA's idea of having an auction just once a year. But maybe they had it right all along!
  • Morning,

I spent a little time perusing the catalouge from legendary last week and then on line last night and IMHO I couldn't believe some of the prices most of the Non Sport had already reached, and this wasn't even with afterhours yet. Haven't looked yet this morning, But........

About the only bargains I saw last night still going late were some of the individual HOW and Mars Attacks cards, but I am sure they were way bet up after hours......going to check right now !!!

Neil - A complete raw Mars Attacks set sold for a little under a grand with the juice. I thought that was cheap considering the fact, one in almost identical shape sold on Ebay recently for $2,500.
  • Morning,

Wow, now I stand corrected, it looks like the prices I saw yesterday afternoon never went up. Now I'm kicking myself in the A$$, there were some real steals that just happened in Non Sports !!

I am a bit overwhelmed as well. Alot of auctions do not even have catalogs, which makes it even tougher to know what is out there. I end up paging through endless screens of high grade commons in alot of these auctions. Great deals out there for set builders. I have picked up some really nice cards for my t222 set in alot of these small auctions.

I would like to see it cut down to a few big high grade catalog auctions per year and then a few quarterly internet auctions, but as ebay continues to raise fees alot of dealers will continue to build there own auction sites to save money and make a little on the consignments. Probstein123 could probably give some insight into what the advantage of a personal auction might be vs. ebay?

I think the number of auction sites has ballooned to fill the void from eBay. eBay's changes over the past several years has definitely caused them to lose market share in the collectible area. They are moving more to a fixed price model for high volume consumer items which doesn't fit well with the needs of the collectibles community.

I'd definitely agree with your assessment.

Ya know - I don't buy from major auctions very often but don't mind the catalogs - to look at.

I can understand the overload - but the more places to buy - call it competition? - the better for the buyers?

Since auctions seem to be going south on ebay - I noticed a larger amount of games I collect are in big BINs - I'm finding less and less to bid on lately.
