Do you prefer older or newer baseball cards?

Ive started collecting cards again about 4 months ago and Ive gotta say - its a whole different ball game now. I purchased a Beckett out of curiosity around that time and I could believe my eyes - the prices off sooo many cards have dropped and players such as Frank Thomas (which was the hottest guy in the 90s (along with Griffey of course) was a common player in today's market - besides his rookie cards which were valued at next to nothing.
Long story short my love of cards goes way back so I decided to pick up some cards that Ive always wanted but could never afford (now since there affordable that is) - I preferred to start with all my favorite cards and players from the 80's - the make my way up but not past '04 really. It gets too crazy with all the inserts from that point on. I Love vintage cards but they are pretty expensive but If I do come across some such as I did like 1970 Roberto Clemente (has to look like a psa 8 or higher in order for me to grab it) for only $25 which I thought was a great deal.
Ive collected all my favorites pretty much including the key cards from the 80's - 82 Cal Ripken Traded and Roger Clemens Fleer 84 update so I think Ill be making my way back.
How about you guys - do you find as much excitement in the newer cards or the hunt for older treasures?
Btw - I'm very new to this board/forum so hello to all

There are a few modern guys but most buy to flip or collect refractor sets.
Good luck with your quest and welcome to the board.
Since you are collecting baseball cards you will find no shortage of other collectors here as the vast majority of the discussion is baseball and there are some very smart contributors.
I started off as a modern collector, and a player collector (Cal Ripken Jr.), but in the past couple years I've been really getting into the older cards (pre-1980), especially the 1952 Topps and 1971 Topps. These are cards that I always admired as a kid but could never afford to buy. Now that I'm a big boy and all grow'd up, I've been spending much more time messing with my "dream cards".
The truth is, collect what interests you, that's all that's important.

<< <i>Hi, hello, how are ya?

Do chiseled stone portraits count as cards?
I collect mostly from the late 60's to the early 80's. I think it is that reliving your youth thing.
The newer cards just don't appeal to me and I hate all the manufactured rare cards of today, but that is JMHO.
Brick, when I see that welcome sign I immediately think of you, LOL.

To answer your question, definitely vintage. Even when I was a kid (I'm 33 now) I was just drawn to the cards from the 50's & 60's. I love the little cartoons on the back, the sometimes poor graphic design...you can tell they were produced for kids, not investors. When I first got into collecting, it was the late 80's and lived in a very rural area which meant no card shops, let alone shows. The idea of even SEEING a Mickey Mantle card seemed alike a long shot, but to actually own one? Ha! Might as well dream of being an astronaut lol. Sometimes friends at school would bring older cards in, and I'd trade for them.
Now that I have (a little bit of) money and this thing called the internet was invested, I am able to purchase the cards I always dreamed about, the Mantles & Berras and whatnot.

Although I'm obviously new to this board - I'm definitely not a newbie as far as identifying card years/manufactures, key players and values for the most part but I feel I can learn a lot of extras from you folks. I do have some great cards that eventually I will show on here but I don't want too yet because I don't wanna feel like I'm just on here to brag because that's not what I'm about. I just LOVE cards and I love sharing what I have and I especially enjoy seeing what others are collecting as well so with time, I will scan and post some cards from my collection for you guys to see and critique. Eventually I will show my prized possession for you guys to enjoy and ask questions if you have any ofcourse
I also do attend a local monthly card show and tend to pick up cards that Ive always had an interest in and Ill scan them and post them and give a review of the card shows along with neat stuff I came across there.
Again - BIG THANKS to everyone and look forward to seeing you guys on other of the forums as well.
Marc
