Need opinions on a two of a kind piece. (Mantle)

This jacket is a hand cut sheep skin jacket, it would come with a letter of provenience (Spelling?... Also, very reputable source)

He said he had these jackets made in the late 80's or early 90's

The jacket is really heavy, I'd probably say it was pushing a good 15-20 lbs probably more.

What do you think an item like this would be worth?

The only other jacket in existence belongs to Mantle's previous accountant.

Does the jacket have anything to do with Mantle, or is it just a generic Yankees jacket?

Is there a tag that identifies the manufacturer/designer of the jacket?

  • It was specifically made for Mantle, there is only one other like it. Everything is hand cut.

    So Mantle wore it?

You need to be a little more specific on an item like this. The fact that the jacket was "made for Mantle" really doesn't mean much. Are there any photographs with him wearing it? What does your provenance actually say? A letter from the accountant confirming what you claim would be a big step in the right direction.

If you can eliminate all (or most) doubt in the matter, this could be a very expensive item.

    Good luck!

I would be EXTREMELY buying an item like this. Way too easy to replicate even if it is a high quality jacket. Also, made for Mantle and actually worn or once owned by Mantle are very very different. I made a crayon drawing for Mr Mantle...does that mean he ever had possession of it? I know thats a silly analogy but it makes the point.

And on that auction, zero bids and sits at 0.00. I think that may tell you something on it's desirability. Then again, it has two days left and bidding could go crazy but my gut feeling is that it will go for the price of a nice jacket and no more.

So, does anyone want to bid on my crayon drawing that was done for Mantle? It's up for auction!

"I would be EXTREMELY buying an item like this."

Leaving out a word can change the entire meaning.

I'm going to go with I would be extremely careful buying an item like this.

If nothing else it's a cool jacket. I'd pay cool jacket money for it not it belonged to Mickey money.

  • It comes from an agent of mantles and is definetly authentic

Can't tell for sure but auction photo seems to show Mantle with jacket hanging over back of chair next to him. You might have a winner!

    Good luck.

Does the agent have a pen that mantle could have used to write the check for the jackect?
Did the guy give you a price on the item? Do you feel it's to high of a price? Whats your take on the item sean?

Id add 100% to the value because Mantle might have owned it and wore it a few time in his later life.

An item like this ... much of the value IMO would be the Jacket itself, and only some added value because he owned well after his career was over, or may have worn it a couple times.

You really cant add large inflated value on every nic nac Mantle had in his house in the 1980-90s, ..... it would be different if it was a contemorary piece for his playing days, he signed it, wore it often (w/photos) or it was a trophy or award of some type. Personal items that would have good value IMO are things like an old Credit Card with his name on it, or better yet a photo ID or old Driver License, those IMO have far more value than a high quality jacket that still looks brand new, made well after his playing days, that sat in his house for a few years before he passed away.

I remember an auction many years ago where every single lot of that auction was Mantle related or was owned by Mantle at some time .....including that piece of crap shed of a house he grew up in. I wish I could find the catalog (I tried but its packed away somewhere), this Jacket may have been in that auction, its the same type of item this auction was full of.

LOL yeah, sometimes on my laptop I type out words and hit a key that deletes a word or two...that is exactly what I was meaning to say...EXTREMELY CAREFUL...

to add...as for me, I dont know if I would tie up my money in an item like this. It's really off the beaten path and may be tough to find a good buyer for it. But heck, I suppose if a person can make 50 bucks, why not. Consider yourself lucky if you make a healthy profit on it.
  • at the price being asked i immediately passed,,,, I will probably post it once that auction has finished it was a price that would have been appetizing had it been mantle worn or owned, but the OTHER one (that one being auctioned, I believe) is the one that mantle owned.

But the information obviously is accurate and can be verified (auction says 2)

If I had money to waste I would buy this to wear it was INCREDIBLY comfortable.

I know making one new (sheep skin/hand cut) is close to $2k (asking price is less than that)

He had one of Nolan Ryan (asking $150), only two made - other for Ryan

He had a vintage cubs jacket (70s~) for $150, a cubs team issued equipment bag and expos as well ($75) I passed on these but would be happy to pick them up for others if they wanted - they are still available.
