Aside from what a 'preprint' is, I've always been curious about Mr. Ali's signatures considering his Parkinson's Disease. Does he still sign himself? Auto pen? I don't know and I've always wondered. I don't know much at all about autographs, but also, was Roy Campanella paralyzed totally? Or was he still able to sign after his accident? Sorry to Threadjack, but I think an answer may be part of the initial thread question (if I'm not mistaken).

Campanella, who had a beautiful signature before the accident, was still able to sign although his signature was (understandably) terrible.
Pre-Printed? You mean the person signed the photo before the photo was printed. I would love to see this!!! You can not sign something that has not been made.
It's called a Facsimile Autograph.
I've collected Baseball Auto's for over 20 years. Termology is important.

I've been told Campy had a Signing device. I was told the device would hold the pen in his hand and that is how he would sign things. So it was actually the machine doing the signing.
These Auto's of Campy still command a premium, since the pen was in his hand (also, most people can't afford a pre-accident auto)

Well thats funny because "Pre-Print" is correct the termINology...it's a photo with the signature printed in it...
yes, i believe this ali is a pre print, in fact i believe this exact photo was slabbed by psa/dna and a board member who had one found out it was pre printed a few years ago, i believe joe took care of him and made things right.
I have one of these too. In the early to mid 1990s, you would get these in the mail from Ali when you wrote to him asking for a signature. It's not a pre-print, but IS an autopen.

I just wanted to clarify my post above to make the distinction. A preprint is a photo that has the signature actually printed on it. This is not what the Ali photo is (or at least mine is most definitely not a preprint). An autopen photo bears a real "signature" per se, but instead of being hand-signed, it is signed by a machine. That is what this photo is... the signature is "real" (not printed), but is not hand-signed by Ali. As someone noted above, it is almost semantics. At the end of the day, Ali did not hand sign these photos.

Yes, it's an autopen. I still can't believe dealers sell these as authentic, sometimes with COA's. I also find it strange that buyers don't do their homework before purchasing autographs, epically Ali's.

Edit to add... This is a serious question, I've got absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

It's a photo with an autograph printed in it. Say you find a signed picture of someone on google then printed it, thats a pre-print.

As for Ali, I'm not sure. I was under the assumption that he only sent out pre-prints when requesting an auto TTM.

Well your wrong, a facsimile autograph is printed ON the photo, a pre-print is an autograph printed IN the photo...
