Nice Little Package from BBCE Today!

My unopened collection grew substantially today. The rack packs are 76 Topps Baseball and 79 Topps Football. The two cello boxes are 78 and 79 Topps baseball.

Edit to add: The point of the thread was to ask, does it hurt the value of the cello box if I rip the cellophane to search the packs for stars?

The answer to your question is both Yes and No.

No, because the cellophane is put on the box by BBCE, so really it's still a complete "unsearched" box without the cellophane...

    and...

Yes, because by being an individual collector owning a 70's cello box... you are gonna be hard pressed to realize a better price in the future if you decided to sell then you would be having the cellophane and BBCE inventory sticker/label on the box (IE. the collecing world will know the box is 100% legit)

BBCE is going to have to start using something a bit more enhanced than everyday shrink wrapped cellophane and a handwritten note as they grow their business. Only a matter of time before people start forging this method with regularity. After all, there are thousands of dollars to be made.

Nice! I'd love to get a 1978 or 1979 Topps cello box. I saw that Kruk cards had a few recently, but missed them. Those 1976 Topps rack packs are beautiful! Congrats again.

BBCE sealed is like having the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. If you are buying to rip then no issue. If you ever anticipate
selling in the future then keep it sealed with Steve's sticker on the shrink-wrap.

I'd keep the cellophane on, it probably adds at least 10% to the price.

Matt ... would you pay more for an opened box on ebay or one sealed from Steve? I think that answers your question. Good luck with your new purchases.

I would say yes - but - I have a shrink wrap system just like BBCEx - I could "search" the box - find the star pack - replace it with another - re"seal" with my shrink-wrap and no one would be the wiser.

At least that's my take - and in no way am I attempting to disparage BBCEx or anyone else - just want - IMO - to be clear that one can't be 100% on anything with the BBCEx seal of approval - EXCEPT - if it came DIRECTLY from BBCEx.

If your plan is to sell the box at a later date and get as much as you can for it, I'd say keep it sealed, as there will be a premium for a BBCE shrinkwrapped box. That said, I'd if you want to enjoy looking at the packs as a collector, I'd say open the box and enjoy the box, FWIW. Experienced collectors will always be able to tell whether the packs are authentic or not, and will bid accordingly, should you decide to sell at a later date.

    Hey Matt,

Nice haul there. You are now 4 1976 rack packs ahead of me, LOL.

I agree with Tim. If you are looking at these boxes as pure investments, then leave them shinkwrapped as those boxes will generate more business from the collecting community as a whole based on BBCE's reputation. But as an unopened pack collector, I'm buying to look over the packs and see if there are any star hits in those boxes. image

Tim also hit it on the head that experienced unopened pack collectors can tell whether the packs are good or not if you provide good scans and will bid accordingly if you do remove the shrinkwrap and decide to sell later on.

Your collection is coming along great Matt!!!
