Any idea what this might be worth?

Autographed Orlando Magic Basketball from '95/'96 team (Shaq's last year)

First, a little back story: my wife went to high school in Orlando, and during an open house in Sept of '96 she entered a raffle and won the basketball you see here. I am considering selling the ball, however before I do so I want to learn as much as I can about it to maximize the sale amount. As you can see the ball is signed by the entire team and includes all prominent signatures. This would be from the '95/'96 team which of course was Shaq's last year as a member of the Orlando Magic. In fact by the time the ball came into my wife's possession Shaq was already in a Lakers uniform. There's no C.O.A., however the autos match up with what I've seen online and look to be legit. The ball is in excellent shape and has been stored out of light and in the ball cube you see in the pic.

Any idea on value? Any insight on how to maximize sale amount? Any other helpful comments? Thanks in advance.

  • You will need proper authentication for max value of the ball. I suggest e-mailing or getting in touch with them and see if you can obtain a letter from Orlando. Alternatively you can pay for PSA/DNA or JSA.

    I can't attest to value.

There is no way you will ever get Orlando to give a COA on something that was given away 15 years ago. Its not like they are going to have a data base of ietms they gave away and can pull that up to issue the COA.

Spence or PSA/DNA can give you a COA if they deem the autos to be real and honestly, that would be the way to go to maximize your return but going the authenticating route might not be cost effective. I dont think you will get much of a return on that ball above what you will spend to authenticate the signatures. Just my opinion!
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

That is my fear as well. Assuming I do not go forward with getting COA's (and I'm leaning no) does anyone have any idea of what this might go for? I see signed Magic Basketballs for sale on ebay, but none are quite like mine and of course those are all "Buy It Nows".

Would it be worth at least doing the Shaq auto? If I was a buyer, that might go a long way toward legitimizing the item in my mind. Of course, I don't buy autos since I don't beleive anyone can truly authenticate signatures with anywhere near 100% certainty.

    IMO

Dont put any $$ into the ball, just sell it "as is" with the same story, its (donation/raffle) a common story for a modern signed piece.

It would be a different story if say Shaq died in 1999, then Id say just get his sig authenticated.... but thats obviously not the case, he has signed (scribbled on) 27,876 items since that ball.....

bottom line.............. no cons fake "team signed balls" Not worth it, plus if they screw up they are out the $$ for the gimmick ball, ....they fake single signed items ie DiMaggio, Mantle, etc. on inexpensive modern paper or photos.... for more $$ and easier sell

I'd say it would sell for about $60-$75 on eBay; not much interest in team signed baseketballs (unless legit Bulls from their glory years).

Damn, I was hoping for a bit more than $75? But it is what it is I guess. Dpeck she went to Colonial.
