When you find neat coins at a B&M that aren't in your area of expertise:

Do you mentally jot them down and check w/ the people here who collect them to see if they would want them? Or do you just go about your day?

I ran across some coins today that I thought were pretty neat (likely expensive) that I don't know anything about and it got me to thinking who might.

Occasionally I will come across coins outside of my collecting knowledge and may decide to purchase them!

I won't buy anything spur of the moment that I'm not sure about the asking price.

If something catches my eye I'd rather do some research and return to purchase.

This past August I was back in Traverse City, MI - and I learned that my childhood coin shop that I thought had closed had actually moved to another location - so I went to go check in out.

Times are pretty tight, and I don't have much bread to spend on coins these days, so I did not think I would be buying anything - I just wanted to look around for old times sake.

Then I spotted a lovely, matched, gem, complete set of silver Roosies, displayed in a pristine, white, capitol holder... I really had never given a thought to collecting Roosies, but working for two years I don't think I could assemble a set this nice for twice the asking price - so I left with the set!

I have the gift of exceptional recall as far as knowing what many here collect, and on more than one occasion I've bought items on speculation for them with great success. Sometimes it involves having a sixth sense about the value of an item, whether one is knowledgeable or not about the item. The large cents with the vulgar alteration on reverse which I just sold in the BST were something I hadn't seen for many months, but I knew where they were and what their value should be for several members, even though I don't collect them or care about them. It isn't necessarily about making lots of money either. It is more of a mental exercise than anything else for me. image
