Do you consider any portions of your collection to be "valueless?"

291fifth291fifth Posts: 25,233 ✭✭✭✭✭
They may be rare.

They may be interesting ... to you.

But ...

absolutely no one else cares.

I think some portions of my medal collection are approaching that point.
All glory is fleeting.

Yes, and yes, it's the medals.

Edit: And the obsolete bank notes from the QDB reference collection.

I have an old 1964 Proof Canadian nickel that I doubt I could sell, but it's a notch above valueless because it's still worth face value.

My hoard of circulation-found 's' mint coins is pretty dumb
    I collect circulated U.S. silver

I have a few modern graded SMS halfs that have really deep mirrors but missed the Grade designation like CAM needed to be valuable. When I see them in dealers junk box I buy them.

Much of my collection is valuable only to me and I'm just fine with that.

I was going to put my small number of heavily circulated proof half dollars, but they are worth a half dollar.

even the counterstamped and holed coin collector's have at least face value on their side.

I bought the Dalai Lama medals from the Mint when they came out. (they are still available) I'm thinking those will be valuable only as keepsakes.

A lot, but the ones I've kept the longest are some rolls of circulated 1960-D small date Lincolns that I started saving as a kid after someone said they were worth money. It turned out to be the 1960-P. Even today I put them aside if I run across one.

My collection of Die Chips and Die cracks are border line worthless. but its a fun thing to cherry pick ( how you cherry pick things that have no value ). BUT its fun to do nonetheless. For as something i collect that i cant put a price on is my $10 1902 Blue seal johnstown note. 1 of 2 date backs. and 1 of 6 on the whole bank. but I couldnt part with it.

I have a bunch of circulated early Lincoln cents in 2X2 cardboard flips...most you can make out the dates from 09 to the mid 20's, no value to anyone, but they are still neat to look at...especially when it comes to resisting the temptation to clean them with a pencil eraser.

Absolutely. I've never been a sheep though, always been a wolf. I don't follow the crowd and don't worry about it. Being a loner has always been AOK for me. I have plenty of material the market would choke on but I love it. So be it.

I have a few coins, like drastic machine doubling and tripling that I have as examples of such (minor errors) in my general error type set. The coins are really only worth face value.

Yes I have a plastic storage container it all goes into from collections I buy (I have a policy of never cherry-picking). Someday, I will just list the whole pile on eBay and let it run.

I have quite a few that fall into that description. I have about 60 real nice raw japanese coins from many a century ago that would bring very little if listed on ebay with a 1 cent start.

I have a Lighthouse set of 20 world one oz silver .999 coins in plastic capsules-- one panda, one Britannia, one Maple leaf, ect. Other than getting lucky and getting a key date Kangaroo silver coin the rest of the set would go for just a bit over melt. It's my favorite collection, though.

I just remembered a worthless collectible I own.

remember that chick on CNBC who painted a Greenspan painting on air and they auctioned it ???

I don't own that one, but I own one of her paintings of Greenspan. Now that he has been scapegoated by the true criminals in the mortgage fraud game, people have taken them off the walls and hiding them under the bed and in the closets. The auction winner is embarassed to show theirs.

Mine still hangs on the wall.

I pick up most of my coins at face so I cant lose much. But the nicer key dates i'll never have any down side i pick them up at the right price... That is the key.... image

    Hoard the keys.
